Trade Betts
Although he just signed a contract extension, I think it is time to consider trading Betts. His value is probably about as high as it will ever be, and I think it would send a strong statement to the players - you continue to make mistakes (fumbling) you will not be a Redskin.

I think that would be a terrible move. Betts value now is high because he has been playing hard, but you don't trade someone for two fumbles. He is way to valuable to this team next year. We now know we have a starting caliber running back to give Portis a break next season and TJ will never be as productive for us as Betts is. We need to keep Betts and have that one two punch. Portis and Betts together can really wear down a defense fast.

I think he has four fumbles.

as much as i think trading betts could yield soem high value picks or players, i honestly believe the redskins will make it work with clinton and ladell. frankly, instead of handing the ball off 30 times to one of them, have them run it 15-20 times each, keeping each of them fresh and keeping each of them HEALTHY. Even if one goes down, the other one is more than capable of picking up the slack. Plus, Betts signed a good deal with us and isn't going to cost us LOADS of money to keep around. Stop with the trades, use the draft. late round players will make this team and make it fantastic.
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.
Hail to the Redskins!

I agree with you, it would be a terrible move. By the way his fumbles cost us good chances to win three games, but then again he was the main reason we were in two of them.
To Riggins_fan the statement it would make to the other players is, "We would rather over pay for free agents, than keep our own." Which is just what everyone has been complaining about for years. Tiki Barber used to fumble ALL OF THE TIME before Tom Coughlin got to NY and now he very rarely looses a ball. AND THANK GOD HE IS RETIRING! I love CP and Betts, but they aren't in the same class as Tiki!

No. you don't trade a good-to-above average RB for fumbling. What you do is, you tape the football in his hands for two weeks. Make it so he has to poop, shower, shave etc. with that football cradled and taped. In my experience, fumbling is generally caused by having your attention split by oncoming traffic, opening lanes and possibly crowd distraction (that part, I wouldn't know anything about)...so you make it a point to have the ball feel like it's missing when you're not carrying it.
I know, I know...he's a professional....but fumbling/inattention are fundamental problems (with the emphasis placed squarely on the 'mental') and should be dealt with with a basic approach.

I seem to remember Keith Griffin having a similar problem, and the solution was to give him a ball to carry around for the whole offseason. Fumbling can be corrected - whereas a lot of the things that Betts does well come from talent that you simply don't trade away.

I think we should trade him. This team, (at least the D), had way to many problems to hold on to a running back we dont need and can get something for. I think this "one two punch" thing is a load of crap. This concept has a history of not working in the NFL. I remember one game the announcers talking about teams that have tried to get two similar running backs involved in the game and it never really worked. CP is an amazing athlete and he does not need Ladell Betts taking half his carries. With the line playing they way they have, (and hopefully that will carry over to next season), JC under center and CP back, I dont see why we need Betts. Give it to you're workhorse, then use the big guys on the goal line. I like the Sellers/Ducket backfield in that situation.
So, in short, I think we should trade Betts and re-sign Duckett.

Absolutely, and while we're at it, I think we only need Jason Campbell at quarterback. Let's release our other qb's without replacing them.
Actually, we only need two guards, two tackles, one centre and one tight end.
Release the rest, I say. What better way to reduce our cap hit than to only have 25 players on the roster? Depth is not needed.

I would love to see us trade him. What good is a running back that can't be trusted to hold onto the football. And it's not 4 fumbles, it's actually 6 for him on the season (3 were lost), which ties him for second in the NFL among all running backs. The only player that finished the regular season with more was Willie Parker (7) but he had almost a 100 more rushing attempts on the season than Betts.

Give the guy a break before this year every time he put it on the ground we lost the ball this year we did get half of them back

Six, actually, and five in the last eight games. And they all seem to come at the most inopportune time. Hopefully, he can work on his ball control for next year. I doubt he's going anywhere.

This team is not in a position to cling onto every good player we have for the sake of depth. Running backs are a dime a dozen and Betts hasn't shown anything that Rock or any other back will similar skills would do put in that situation.
If our D was fine and this team was doing alright, then I would love to keep Betts. But considering we need every last pick or cap space for free agents that can help us on the defensive side of the ball, it just doesn't make much sense to me to stack the running back position, when we need so much help on D.

That might be the most ridiculous statement i have ever heard. Have you been watching the games the last 6 weeks? You are aware that he was 4th in the NFL in rushing the last half of the season aren't you? Not to mention the 50 or so receptions this year... Sure, he needs to protect the ball better, but that is what the offseason is for.
I am in agreement, as are a lot of people, that one of the runningbacks needs to go. Even if we can't agree which one needs to go, They are both too good to be benched. Betts value is the highest it will ever be and Portis' is probably the lowest. So, even though i personally like Betts better, I could agree he should be traded. CP should be fine after the surgery and should pick up where he left off.

Betts could get us a good cornerback or some interior lineman that we need desperately. We have an influx of running backs and right now betts is our best bargaining chip.
I love betts but portis is the man and our defense needs shoring up.

6 fumbles in 8 games....you all do the math, Betts is a serviceable back nothing more nothing less. For all you fools out there thinking he is better than CP your all on crack, Portis is faster, tougher doesn't fumble nearly as much and is a GAMEBREAKER top 5 QB. When he comes back next year and runs for 2000 yards to make up for the yards he didn't get this year all the naysayers will be sniffing his jock strap all over again! What we need to do is package Al Saunders, Brandon Lloyd and Ladell Betts and trade them!!

Gotta give Betts a little more time, hes kind of like Tiki Barber, very talented at running, just needs to learn on how to hold the ball.
Wouldnt you like the Redskins to be insane in the pass game and run game?
