Last years mistake! Haunting us now!
Letting go of Lavar was the biggest mistake ever. We should have paid him what he deserves. Ever since his departure our D dosent have that same spark. Taylor and Washington have been solid but we still need a beast on the outside. Our corners are solid still but it just seems like there is something missing on D. I know you guys all can see it as well. We must either get him back. Or draft for another beast like Lavar or someone like Shawn Merriman. A stud outside backer pressuring the Qb all day and night. Opposite side Washington would really bring our D back to how it was last year. This should be number one priority in the offseason. This would really take our D to the next level. Maybe Mcintosh can pan out but we will see.

Or draft for another blue collar guy who can fill the role and really bring our D back to how it was last year. This should be number one priority in the offseason. I know, he would totally be the best player on our Injury Reserve List!

But I actually belive our biggest mistake was letting not only Ryan Clark walk, but also letting Omar Stoutmire walk. Both those guys played with so much passsion and energy, not to mention they played their roles so well.
But maybe the most underated guy we let go that no one has been talking about is Bill Musgrave.
Let's see, Brunell Pre-Musgrave = terrible : Brunell Pro-Musgrave = Pro Bowl numbers/playoff bound : Brunell Post-Musgrave = terrible...
I know our Front Office gets ripped for letting key role guys walk and sign big name free agents instead, but now that I realize it, we do the same thing with coaches.

Agreed. They have affected us more than LaVar.
Stoutmire played a role similar to Prioleau and did very well but Ryan Clark is our biggest loss of the offseason in my opinion.

You dont like Merriman? Is it just because of the alleged roids? Its a bit brow raising but anyone can take a bad supplement. If it happened to S. Taylor we'd all protect him.
Now if I had to take a chance and swap based off of performance? Id pick Merriman in a heart beat. We could pop Wright in Carlos's place and it wouldn't be too big of a deal with the pass rush Merriman creates.
The road to the number 1 pick gaining speed!
It's nice to give the "coulda-shoulda-woulda's" but what do we do now????
All of our "core guys" on the defense being let go was a huge mistake especially when you bring guys for far more money than it would have taken to keep the "core guys", who are stinking up the joint on D.
Move Vincent to FS and Taylor to SS. Do a sign and trade of Duckett for late round draft picks and draft a FS and a D-Lineman and groom them to be ready by 2008. Or trade AA for draft picks or a young D-lineman that we can groom. Sounds a little off but you got to "coach up" what you got now so that we can have time to get draft picks ready.
I strongly believe that we need to get back to building within. But all of this is mute if our first move is not getting a qualified GM in here...

Whomevers decision it was to let Ryan Clark go and replace him with AA should be flailed at the post. Quite possibly the worst move we have made in the last 5 years.
Not only did Clark elevate Sean Taylor's game, he also brought the wood with him everytime he hit someone, the guy was a beast and wanted to stay here more than anything, we just would'nt even give him a fair deal and then brought in AA and made him the highest paid saftey EVER in the league at the time! Total nonsense.

How 'bout we spread the blame a little on his agent's plate, too? It takes two to tango and to arrive at a win-win situation in ANY negotiation. If the Skins dropped the ball, the agent did NOTHING to help pick it up. So he/she deserves some flogging as well.

Back and better than ever!

this is more than 2 cents worth od reading you make alot of valid points here that have caused this team problems in the past as well as the future and present. the deal with the way they go after big name free agents and big name coaches is the ultimate problem ...again we didn,t need an overhaul..bill has been missed no doubt about it..it,s truly amazing what gets lost in all of this craziness doesn,t it..

Yeah, we get rid of LaVar and then get guys who are out of place and give up big plays. No, wait, that WAS LaVar. But he had a good attitude! No wait, "wahhhhh, I want another bonus, boo hooo."
We are so much better off w/o him.

I agree that Lavar was out of place sometimes but I think that all of the coaches here except Marvin Lewis for one year, missed the boat on how to use Lavar effectively. I will beat this drum about Lavar everytime he comes on this board. Our team, the Redskins, should have used and developed this guy at what he was best at at Penn State. Rushing the QB.
IMO he was the next coming of L.T. but the coaching staff here didn't recognize it and it ruined him. Teams are drafting LBs now to be pass rushers. The Ravens (Suggs), Colts (Freeney), Cowboys (Ware), Chargers (Merriman), Jets (Abrahams) just to name a few who have rurned LBs into successful pass rushers. And if you really look at Jason Taylor, KGB, and Kearse, they are really tall LBs playing DE. Look at what Strahan has done to his body. He's lost weight and cut up to become a speed rushing DE. He could actually play LB now. Parcells turned Ellis into a Hybrid DE-LB before he tore his achilles.

Marvin Lewis didn't even like Lavar. He played well for Marty b/c he was given free reign like when he was at PSU

Freeney has always been a DE. In college, and in the pro's. He's slightly undersized, but that's the position he plays.
And every other person on that list you mentioned, plays in a 3-4 defense. Think that's a coincidence?
So, now you're advocating the Redskins trash their entire defensive line scheme (because now you have to go get a nose tackle and big defensive ends), and linebackers (time to get another inside backer), in addition to the stud pass rushing linebacker who I am sure is incredibly easy to pick up?

Yeah. Good pass rushers in the NFL are like good centers in the NBA. Hard to come by. Most teams with a good pass rush do it through decent players and good schemes. Very few teams have that one guy who can consistently pressure the QB on every pass play. The thing is, though, with the skins' strategy of picking up free agents and screwing the draft, its very hard to get a great pass rusher. Yet another reason they need a better personnel dept.
I think I read somewhere that Gregg Williams personally selected Archuletta for his defense.
I can still remember shock and confusion when I first heard about that move. We paid MORE money to get an older, slower, less skilled player to replace Clark, a leader who knew the system.
One of the most confusing moves made by the Redskins in my lifetime. I actually rank it at as the 2nd worst move by any NFL team this offseason.
The only one worse in my opinion is the Patriots decision to let legendary kicker Adam Vinatieri leave and go to their biggest rivals when they are $12M under the salary cap. They chose to replace him with a rookie when they couldve easily re-signed him....somebody explain that one....
I only mention this is as evidence that the Redskins aren't the only NFL team doing incredibly stupid things during the offseason. Even the great Patriots can slip up from time to time....although they still have Tom Brady...and quite frankly, that's all you need....

The rookie's numbers aren't that bad, mostly bc they never let him kick long FGs. I've seen several instances where they have gone for it on 4th down instead of kicking FGs from about 45 yards bc they just don't trust him yet.
Vinatieri actually missed 2 FGs in that game at New England of all places, but I think he's like 15-17 on the year, including several clutch kicks during their win @ Denver.
But come January when the Patriots are in the playoffs and are faced with the decision to go for it on 4th down or kick a 48 yard FG, they are going to have quite a decision to make, whereas in years past, Vinatieri could just trot on the field and nail it.
I just don't understand how you can let him walk away when you have the money to pay him. The salary cap doesn't roll over to next year. I really just don't get it....
