shawn taylor behind bars?... bowen stays?
i thought this was kind of interesting. i found it on pro football weekly in the "way we here it" section of the nfc east. what do you guys think about this?
The team at least has to consider the possibility of being without the services of FS Sean Taylor, who faces up to 46 years in prison on charges of felony aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of battery. Taylor’s case is scheduled to go to court March 20, and there are no scheduled hearings before then. So the team must sit and wait for the outcome — Miami-Dade prosecutor Mike Grieco said he expects it to go to trial — of a case where one of their most talented defenders faces serious charges and jail time and might be unavailable to them next season and possibly beyond. It certainly changes the team’s thinking heading into the offseason. Whereas Matt Bowen ($2 million base salary in 2006), who was relegated to reserve and special-teams duty last season, was expected to be a potential salary-cap victim, the team might be forced to keep him around given that he has experience at both safety spots and would be an adequate fill-in. It also could change the team’s strategy in terms of adding another safety through the draft or free agency as insurance.

I think the chances of him getting off are probably 90-10. His lawyer is just going to be too good. If he was able to get off that DUI the way he did, you know he has good lawyers and I hate to say it but these days it seems like that's all that matters.

I know nothing about the case. I know nothing about the evidence against him so it is certainly premature for me (or anyone) to suggest that Sean Taylor will more likely "get off" or not. I will say this, however: The prosecutor suggests that this case will go to trial? I doubt it.
90% of all criminal cases are pled out and this one is really no different.
Mark my words, as March 20th is approaching, you're gonna hear about a plea being offered (and likely accepted) that will keep Taylor out of jail or, in the alternative, send him to jail for only 3 months . . . so he'll be back by training camp.
Just a hunch.

The funny thing is, that might just be the best place for him during the offseason

I mean, I'd rather him be in jail for 3 pointless months than let him do whatever it is he does in the offseason...

If he gets the 46 years, do we take a chnce on him after he's out.....he'd only be like 68 or so.

I would not worry to much about the trial. If he is found innocent, it ends there. IF he is found guilty, there will be an appeal. This could drag out in court for a very long time.
It would be a feather in the county attorney generals cap if they won but still there seems to be more not said than said in this case.
Let it run its course before getting to excited about it.

i just find it hard to believe that we, the fans, really care more about guys being on the field, no matter what their past is. as long as they play, and play well, we support them, even if they are facing jail time.not someone i would have looked up to when i was a kid, or as an adult for that matter, though everyone chimes in that he will "get off." sad.

dabear, if you actually were a member of this forum I'd respect your comment but you clearly dont know what you're talking about. If you did your research and knew what you were talking about you'd know that many of us have been severely dissapointed with many of his actions.
You dont know what you're talking about in regards to how many of us feel about his actions, especially the spitting incident.
Regardless of his behaviour he's better than any safety you got.
Why does it matter if he's facing jail time? Were you there? Did you see him do it? He may be 100% innocent for all we know. Just because someone is accused of doing something doesn't mean they're guilty.

Who says we aren't? Nobody on this site is part of the coaching staff. Those guys are pro's and just as good if not better than any coaching staff in the league. Do you honestly believe they don't have a plan for this? Are you even aware of the surplus of safeties we already have on our roster? Losing Sean would not be the end of this team. We could do great things without him but of course it'd be easier with him. Even if he left saftey wouldn't be the weak link on our defense, DE would still hold that crown.
John Lynch has had plenty of dirty hits.
Rodney Harrison is known for dirty hits.
Dont make them sound like angels. Sean isn't an angel so why do you continue to prove something that we're aware of. So what that he does those things? What can I or anyone else do about it? The league fined him, the coaches reprimanded him and the world continues to turn. Don't dissapear all of a sudden if someone on the Bears squad throws a fit and does something stupid.
Sean Taylor has the potential the be the best safety in the NFL. He's already in the top 10 if not top 5 going into his 3rd year. Its a shame that he's making it harder on himself.

I just hope that Shawn can get passed this with little or no effect on him. This kid as sooooo much potential and I, for one, think that if he can get this behind him, he will start maturing very quickly.

Im not sold on his volatile behaviour and I supported the kid until he spat on that guy. That still disgusts me and I was moreso dissapointed because he had done so well in regards to his behaviour all season long. He doesn't need to spit on people to intimidate them, all he has to do is play.

lynch, dawkins, and harrison have never been waiting for a trial date either. i'm not talking about this kid on the field, his is a rare athlete, we all know this, i'm talking about the image he sets for himself. i wouldn't want a saftey who didn't deliever dirty hits, they are part of the game, however for all he does on the field, he sets himself up for disaster off of it.

First let me say, Taylor should have been in DC last year instead of hanging with the U.
Second, FOURTYSIX frichen years and nothing was stolen and no one got hurt. Heck the Ray Lewis spent only months in jail, and SOMEONE DIED! But the guy that actually killed him got no jail time! What is worong with this country. To me, the DUI that Taylor had was MUCH worse than him pointing a gun at someone that may have stolen his ATVs!

Yeah, tell that to the guy that had the gun allegedly pointed at his head. He's probably still trying to get the stain out of his pants.
