Kornheiser on ESPN's MNF?

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

I heard that on Sirius yesterday. That will be strange to see. He is replacing Gumbell who is going back in the booth.

He raised his voice to the point of yelling every time a player made a big play, every time someone fumbled or made an interception, or any time a player got past the line of scrimmage (it seemed). He talked too much beyond calling the game, which I believe can be done very skillfully without resorting to filling up air all the time. When the momentum seemed to be swinging one way or another he'd start to call games 'in favor' of whichever team looked like it had the advantage. It's all in adjective selection, what you emphasize, and what you dismiss. I don't know, just a combination of things, I guess.

Also, his accent has always annoyed the crap out of me. Yes, I am a bigot. . . :)

Speaking of announcers, I've always enjoyed games called by Gumble. Must be his gentle nature.

JB leaving Fox is a huge blow. They had the best chemisty out of all the broadcastings. Im sad to see that.

I think MNF is gonna stink now, I mean the announcers.

Sounds a little personal. Al Michaels was the voice of MNF...between him, the "Are you ready for some football" song, and the intro music....MNF won't be the same.

Al Michaels was great in my book....even when I wasn't watching the Skins play he always had a good way to call the game....I remember the play where Antonio Ferguson made that acrobatic catch when he fell down and the ball landed on him popped up in the air and he scored a Td....Al Michaels said "He did what??!!"

It's football....its good to have an announcer who calls the game like it should be...kind of like how Marv Albert does in basketball. It will suck if we have to listen to Mike Tirico fight with Joey T for air time. I love Theismann but he is just like Phil Simms...an "I told you so" sort of announcer...they spend more time saying "see I told you that was gonna happen" back and forth than having spectacular catch phrases.

As for Kornheiser, ahh Im luke warm on him. I hate his "columnettes" in the Washington Post...he tries to be funny when talking about the Skins...and his voice is annoying on his Sports Talk 980 show. He reminds me of a Gilbert Gotfried meets Sam Cossell kind of guy and that can be annoying in your ear for 3 hours.

I will give him a shot though. My ideal MNF cast would be any combination of the following:

Bob Costas, Al Michaels, Dan Dierdorff, Greg Gumble, John Madden, and a younger Pat Summerall...man Pat was good back in the late 80s early 90's.

I liked him too. He and Phil Simms started out as CBS's #1 booth with Nantz in studio and then switched in 2004.

Where would they put him? They seem to have Nantz-Simms and Enberg-Dierdorf secured as the top two booth teams.

Here was CBS's full lineup this past season:

Jim Nantz/Phil Simms/Bonnie Bernstein
Dick Enberg/Dan Dierdorf/Armen Keteyian
Kevin Harlan/Randy Cross
Gus Johnson/Brent Jones
Ian Eagle/Solomon Wilcots
Don Criqui/Steve Tasker
Bill Macatee/Steve Beuerlein
Craig Bolerjack/Rich Gannon

With CBS increasing its golf coverage in 2007, Nantz would be working literally year-round with NFL, NCAA hoops and then golf. The could very easily put Gumbel in with Simms, giving Nantz an off-season and he could be on hoops with Packer from December to the end.

Yeah, perhaps. Like I said, I'm not entirely sure what it is that I don't like about him. Something about having him tell me how the game was going would grate against my inner soul (now it's personal, you see. . .)

I'm not particularly nostalgic about Monday Night Football as some kind of entity, so it doesn't bother me that Michaels' leaving will change it. From everything I've heard, Howard Cosell would probably have had some of the same effects on me, yet he's considered by many to be "the voice" when it comes to MNF history. Doesn't make me like him any more. [Not that ever listened to Cosell, as I'm a bit too young for that, so I'm not trying to say anything about the man].

I agree about Theisman and the "I told you so" mentality--he makes a lot of judgements about decisions by coaches or refs that can sometimes come back to bite him, too.

But, Michaels' approach to announcing has always gotten on my nerves, too. Don't know what more I can say about it, but I know that it's not merely some personal thing--it's an issue of taste and style.

Yeah, I get you. I feel the same way about Phil Simms....I simply hate listening to his play by play.

I grew up on Patt Summerall and Madden when they called all the NFC games on Fox.

Monday Night Football with Frank Gifford, Al Michaels and Dan Dierdorf...and I have some nostalgia about it because MNF was must see TV...the only game many people watched outside of their own team that week...especially before satellite TV.

I just hope they keep the song, because there is nothing like hearing "Are you ready for some football??"

I believe Bocephus isn't making the switch. Just the main MNF theme.

Thats too bad. They better come up with something just as good. And it better not be Tim McGraw's "I Like It" crap.

I like Kornheiser as a print journalist, actually quite a lot...but I don't know if I could handle him blathering on for 3 hours at a time.

The competition for airtime between Theismann and Kornheiser will be epic.

So, Al Michaels is going to NBC. It gonna be strange to watch MNF without him. Which sporting events are on NBC, I can't think of anything except maybe the Olympics.

They will have NFL games next year.

The one thing I'm surprised not to have seen mentioned on here (though I didn't really go looking for it) is that there will be games shown only on the NFL Network as well next season. That's regular season games. I was expecting at least some uproar from those without access to NFL Network.

Good point c'ville! The NFL is getting closer to pay per view and these 8 games on "restricted" access are just the begining.

As far as the MNF deal looks to me - Tirico does the play by play and Theisman the color input from a players perspective and TK from the media/fan point of view. I'm not sure how it will play out but we have been told that the "song" will stay and the format will be basically the same....for now. I think that Joe has managed his Redskin "bias" fairly well and has seemed to make an effort to be neutral nationally. He may be more of a homer around DC but IMO he has not been too bad...for Joe
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
