I was wondering anyone here ever played Rugby?

Ive never played rugby but I play football on the weekends with only a mouth peice...

Thats as close as Ive gotten.

When and where do you play? Full Contact or tag/flag? I play on Sat., most of the time, and perhaps maybe we can put together a sweet pick-up game. I must warn you, though...

Full contact, nothing less. We play in NE Baltimore.

You'd never feel comfortable throwing the ball in my direction. JF saw my catching skills.

what college, and what position. I played for the Exiles, Breakers (Pa.), and my college. I am play 8man and flanker (blindside not open). All Rugby is club because the NCAA doesn't sponser it.

I've played here at my school a few times, but it's a little lower than club status even, I think. :lol:

Still fun though.

I know that there's a Rugby club near where I live, and they've got a few different levels for different skill levels, so I've already got plans to go running with a friend this spring so that we can both get involved this summer.

The club in Annapolis is Severn River is that were ur playing or a different one.

I lived in Fiji for 12 years and then finished my school years in Sydney. I then played for 10 more years in 2nd Division Club Rugby. That's about 18 years.

Rugby is a great sport and teaches many great lessons about teamwork and most importantly, drinking!

It is really great to be able to keep up with the "game" thru the internet.

An interesting aspect about Rugby is that we coach players to understand that position is more important than possession. In the NFL you always want the ball but in rugby, given a choice between having the ball on your 5 yard vrs the other team having the ball 5 yards out from the goal line (where you get to score a "try"), the choice is obvious. Give them the ball and then you get it back!! Also, as you always have to pass the ball "back" and are not allowed to pass it forward, you learn very quickly that the ball will always beat the man. That is, you learn that a player rarely gets by another player but by passing the ball you can get your team further up the field.

I thorougly enjoyed the sportsmanship involved - you spent 80 to 90 minutes trying to take your opposing player "out" of the game and as soon as it was over you'd be sharing beers and somtimes your girlfriends with him - great game!

In addition to my love of the Skins, my other teams are Montreal Canadiens in Hockey and the ALL BLACKS in international rugby.

I am a New Zealand rugby fan but I respect other teams such as South Africa, Australia, and Fiji.

I have no love for rugby teams from England or France.

G'day RiC! - The biggest difference between the rugby in the Southern Hemisphere and the North is that (to us) it is almost "war"!

Congrats on the Tri nations and the Bledisloe - one of my best moments in Rugby was in the last World Cup (which the poms won!) - In the semi final we played and beat the Kiwis! One of my pommy friends said "Well we beat the Wallabies and won the World Cup!" I said - Yes, but we beat the Kiwis!
The Kiwis, Springboks and Wallabies play a better level of Rugby and it is most likely because of the Super 12 (now Super 14) Competition.

In Rugby its easier to takeaway the ball than it is in football, u can do it threw just out running the support. (For guys that haven't played Rugby and are reading this, when the tackel happens u keep going, there is no timeouts-no stoppage of play). U can just strip the ball, its easier to take the ball away from the team than it is in football.

Yeah only in Rugby u can dig ur cleats into someone and engage in a fist fight with them. Than after the game ur laughing and joking around, maybe exchanging numbers to hangout sometime. Its great

Nope. I did not play Rugby. I did not play football either. But I love both games.

I engaged competitively in Judo for 15 years. No body and time for other things. Won a few championships and had a few broken bones. My lower back is beginning to remind me about some of my losses every now and then. :evil:

I have a slightly different suggestion! The Redskins should consider doing a "war dance"!
The Haka is a part of the All Black legend! The Haka has evolved over the years and is now a feature of any game involving the New Zealand All Blacks' pre-game ceremonies. Can you imagine if we were able to get some choreographer to put together a Native American War Dance that could be performed before the coin toss or before the kick-off? I think if it did nothing else it would stop all this nonsense about the "name" issue and highlight how proud our team/organization is of our heritage.

Did you guys hear that the pukes were looking at that All Black winger, a couple of years ago? He was unbelievable!

You'd think so, but that isn't the way that it would work in America, IMO. We'd be multiplying our headaches by adding a dance on top of a "racist" name. :roll:

I totally understand! It's amazing really that a team with the name "All Blacks" is revered and the Haka is looked at as an honor to be able to perform it by the athletes and as a "marketing item" by the broadcasters.
Different world! We have so many issues that are so much more important to resolve, it's amazing what some can find so offensive - while others can think of belonging to that same group, as an honor.

I love the Redskins and the Wallabies - I'd be fine if they changed the name "All Blacks" but there would be a few sheep lovers from the land of the long white cloud that might get upset.

The Haka is cool, but I hate teams that r not the all blacks and do it. When I watching a game at Nationals once a team did the Haka, and the team I knew (not disclosing name just turned there backs and gave them the single finger salute). They blew them out to. So many teams that do it, its stupid that is an all-blacks thing, not anyone else. The Redskins should have a war dance before the game that would be sweet. But crappy organazations like the ACLU, would file racism, or others organazations like them.

Actually ...

there are more legends about where the name "all blacks" came from than people telling them. And no, the uniforms are not the ONLY reason why they are called that way according to many.

Legend has it that an announcer appreciating the speed and strength of the team referred to them as ALL BACKS, and the term was misunderstood for ALL BLACKS by some.

Anyway, there are more stories about the origin of the name than there are people telling them. However, not one of them contains an ethnic overtone to race or origin.

Polynesia as a whole is a fantastic world. I was there working last week.

As far as a Redskin dance, it is out of the question in this awful politically correct world. HOWEVER, the Springboks have another routine whete they pass the arm behind the shoulders of the next two teammates linking the whole team and walking at the same time one leg at a time ahead against the other team. Not a haka, but pretty intimidating if you ask me.

I have no ideas about the dance, but it would be cool, put a tepe out in the middle of the field before the game, than have a chant. That would fire up the crowd like non other.
