SI gay for julius jones/dallas! *barf*

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

SI gay for julius jones/dallas! *barf*

Post by die cowboys die »

the main picture on SI's NFL page is julius jones, with the following caption:
SI wrote:Cowboys RB Julius Jones, who averaged 4.9 yards per carry in the preseason, appears poised to become a superstar in 2005.

the lead for the article reads:
SI wrote:How 'bout them Cowboys? This isn't the team of the early '90s, but SI.com's Arash Markazi says all of the pieces are in place for Dallas to make a serious Super Bowl run this season.

i have a few things to say about julius jones. the most important is this:

12/26/2004 vs. washington (only game he's played against us)
22 carries
57 yards
2.6 average
0 TDs
1 Fumble

that pretty much says all we need to know. but i feel inclined to mention the fact that there are no less than 20 RBs in the NFL right now that are better than jones. in no particular order:

1. clinton portis (washington)
2. ladanian tomlinson (san diego)
3. priest holmes (kansas city)
4. tiki barber (new york "giants")
5. curtis martin (new york jets)
6. warrick dunn (atlanta)
7. kevin jones (detroit)
8. jamal lewis (baltimore)
9. steven jackson (st. louis)
10. marshall faulk (st. louis)
11. brian westbrook (philadelphia)
12. sean alexander (seattle)
13. edgerrin james (indianapolis)
14. deuce mcallister (new orleans)
15. jerome bettis/duce staley (whichever is healthy at the time--pittsburgh)
16. whoever is playing at the time for denver
17. ahman green (green bay)
18. stephen davis (carolina)
19. corey dillon (new england)
20. rudi johnson (cincinatti)

there are also 3 promising highly drafted rookies who will probably outshine jones this year (benson, brown, williams).

it's just outrageous and inexcusable to be hyping up the 20somethingth-best RB in the league. meanwhile, we hear nothing about how portis has absolutely shredded defenses so far in limited preseason action- all we hear about is his "disappointing" 1300 yard season. if julius jones ever gets a 1300 yard season, they will be raving about what a great year it was.
***let's not forget that JULIUS JONES IS OLDER THAN CLINTON PORTIS!!! (portis born 9/1/1981, jones born 8/14/1981). in two less weeks of life, portis has amassed 4414 yards and 34 TDs, about 5 times more in both categories than jones's 819 yards and 7 TDs.

i was going to say that i see jones as being about on par with ladell betts-- a very good running back who will probably never be a "star". but i realized the comparison would be insulting to betts.

I got a news flash for y'all. Expect Julius Jones to have a great year. He's a very good young RB and, in my opinion, better than a lot of RBs on that list:

6. warrick dunn (atlanta)
7. kevin jones (detroit)
9. steven jackson (st. louis)
10. marshall faulk (st. louis)
14. deuce mcallister (new orleans)
15. jerome bettis/duce staley (whichever is healthy at the time--pittsburgh)
16. whoever is playing at the time for denver
17. ahman green (green bay)
20. rudi johnson (cincinatti)

Dallas will likely have and "above .500" year as well.

Even if you are right about him having a breakout year, he's still not listed in your personal top ten! Tell me, does the 12th best person at any position warrant multiple news stories and analyst reports about how they are a "young star"?

The point of this thread doesn't seem to be that Orange Julius isn't a good running back (clearly he has talent and potential), it's that he is having his praises sung all over town soley because he's on that team in Dallas, whom the media is too busy going down on to stop to "report" on anything else.

How is Julius Jones better than Duece? Or Rudi Johnson? I wont touch Marshall Faulf and Bettis because their careers are coming to an end in the next few seasons.

You seem to be comparing him to Team offenses and not the backs that you list (if a back is listed.

How would he compare to #16 if he played for Denver?

He'll get more touches than #9 or #10 considering there is only one ball

Bettis and Duce are both injuried. Could Willie Parker may be as good has Jones with a different offensive line?

my point is that both faulk and jackson are better than jones. both bettis and staley are better than jones. i gave jones the benefit of the doubt by consolidating each pair into one spot, since they do share duties on their teams. otherwise the number would've been 22 instead of 20.

as far as injuries are concerned, you can't possibly take that into consideration, since at this point jones has ONLY ever been injured. he's 0/1 in terms of staying healthy in an NFL season, so any other player's current injuries don't put them out of competition with him in terms of "who is a better RB".

i admitted that jones is a good back and will probably have a good season. my point is that he is not a "star", and will probably not fairly earn that status during the season, as a plethora of backs will probably outperform him. however, as long as he gets 1000 yards, the media will doubtlessly give him all kinds of undue fanfare... despite the fact that 1000 yards is a pathetic average of only 62.5 yards per game. also despite the fact that he will most likely end up with 25-33% less yards than portis, and many other backs of higher caliber.

Julius Jones sucks! He's a little guy that goes down with a leg tackle. He fumbles the ball if its slapped. He's about as pathetic as they come. Saying he's gonna have a break out and year and above ball drafting him higher then round 4 on your fantasy team is taking a huge risk.

Also, The cowboys offensive line is pathetic around the edges. Jones will get crushed if he tries to take his speed to the outside. You can say he's gonna have a break out year if you want, but before you do take a look at Jones stats last year and you'll realize he only had good games against teams that had sorry defenses. You can't say that he's all that when he can only run the ball against the pathetic defenses of the NFL.

That is my two cents.

First off, wow that's awesome that Jones is averaging 4.9 yds/carry in preseason. Yeah, so they're going to dominate with that "great" defense of theirs and worse play at QB than we have (not to mention ZERO depth). Facts are facts, Dallas is averaging 162.2 yds/game in the air and we're averaging 260!!!

Here's something for SI to ponder. We have a much better defense and Clinton Portis has averaged 6.2 yds/carry in the preseason!!! Heck even Betts averaged 5 yds/carry when he was in with the starting line.

So, according to SI Dallas is the ninth best team in the NFL and they're going 10-6, getting a Wild Card spot and then beating Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs and the Redskins are the 29th team in the NFL and they're going 4-12. Wow, good logic there!

Woah, woah, woah, hold up here.

Steven Jackson is 10x the back that Jones is!

I agree Jones is good but McAllister and probably Ahman Green are also better.

FYI, I could give a ____ less what SI says about the Cowboys or anyone else. To be frank, no one should.

What do you have to say about the post that started this thread?

Just curious. Obviously the Dallas fans on here were singing Jones's praises during last season, but then i reacall that some were singing Henson's praises too!

Added something to the last post...go read.

You don't gain 800+ yards in only 7 starts because you suck.

Obviously, that's a moot point to you since you yourself stated this thread has little to do with Julius Jones' ability as a running back. Nobody said he was better than Clinton Portis, but it seems that there's such an inferiority complex here (as evidenced by this thread's title) that that comparison just HAD to be made.

Just a thought.

Actually, many a preview has given the Cowboys good reviews...not great but good.

In this day of the NFL, though, unless you're the New England Patriots, you have to read all of that stuff with a grain of salt and not really believe your own hype until you go 16-0 and win the whole thing.

That's why I laughed histerically when I heard the Panthers were SI's pick this year. I could go out and pick the Cards or Bengals by the same merits.

The only thing I know I can count on the Cowboys for 100% is 2 wins against the Redskins (Sorry, just had to throw that in there  )

Hey Primetime! Remember the second time we met in 2004. You know that crappy offensive game! Do you remember Jones running his 2.6 yards for a touchdown. Taylor (out of position) saying "oh crud" then he reached over and smacked the football jones was carrying? It caused a fumble.

If you want to rate him as an elite back then you can go right ahead. But, I won't rate him up there with the Dorsettes or Smiths or whatever until I see him hold onto the ball when its getting slapped!

I'm not going to say he "sucks" because that just isn't true.

But has anyone ever gotten more credit for doing less? He had 2 really good games on national TV against a terrible Bears team and a Seattle defense that mailed it in all year long. When he played against good defenses like ours or Philadelphia's he got nothing. It's not like he carried Dallas to the playoffs. Their record with him and their record without him were basically the same.

I'm not saying he won't be good this year but he has not proved anything yet. These people ranking him above Clinton Portis are completly out of their mind. Let's see him make it through a full season without getting hurt before we annoint him the next Emmitt.

I can't say I'm surprised that what was a top 3 defense in the league could stack the box because Vinny Testaverde's 41 year old @$$ was already worn down and the only healthy offensive threats at that point in time were Witten and Jones.

Stack the defense against the run, make the AARP guy beat you. Worked for most of the game on your part. Just not on that last drive.
