I have it taped too and am planning on watching it Sunday. I look forward to coming to my own conclusion, as I have heard differing opinions. Just an interesting note: I read on IMDB that the first episode will be out on DVD August 2nd.

that show is awesome, definitely powerful...i dont know if anyone has been over there who is on this board, and i sure havent, but if it is anything like that, my heart goes out even more to our men and women fighting over there. i dont support the war, but i do support our troops and hope they come home safely
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

Well as someone who sees the effect of this war everyday in my job,I find this show laughable. I also this it's very disrespectable to the families of those who have loved one "over there". This is real life going on, IED are bad and do horrible things to the human body. To have thay dramatized by hollywood while it's still going on has got to be hard for these famalies. Why haven't we seen any movies about 9/11?

I haven't seen it yet but after seeing the commercial I was thinking in the same chord as DE. I think its pretty disrespectful for them to make a buck off of our troops dying over there. Thats all it is to me, someone is just trying to cash in on this and thats pretty sad. This entertainment and while I dont doubt the show is a pleasure to view one side of me just doesn't seem to care to watch it.

My 2 cents

... that is exploiting and capitalizing on a war that is CURRENTLY going on.

No offense, but you have no idea who you're talking to in DEHog. He LIVES it every day... more than most of you will ever know or realize.

It's easy to rationalize and trivialize when it's just a 'story' to you but the truth is... it isn't just a story to many, many soldiers and their families.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Quick question...to anyone.

Didn't M*A*S*H* do the same thing? I'm not a fan of the show, but didn't it, too, run at the same time as the Vietnam War?

If so, what makes that diffent from "Over There"? Genre?

Just wondering.

You quoted a comment about a show set during a currently running war.

I'm a fan of military movies...check my sig!!

So again I ask why hasn't holloywood done any 9/11 movies? I just think it's in bad taste to do the show while we still have "boots on ground"

Which proves my point..they waited! It's been 4 years. That's a long time in this fast food world we live in. The reason they didn't do it, was because there were civilians killed.

Yea I know thats hollywood for us but that doesn't make it the right thing to do right now. This isn't a documentary or something to further the education of people about this war, I wouldn't watch this to learn, most people are watching it to be entertained. This isn't entertainment to me, this is real life for my family as I have relatives that serve this country. Its just my opinion that I think someone is trying to make money off of peoples hunger for entertainment and emotion. People dont want to see the effects of war, lets get some screaming victims on TV from over there, lets see how people enjoy watching our troops bring tortured when caught..

Right now just isn't the time to have something like this. It just looks like a military soap opera from the commercials.

I won't, or can't, watch "Over There". I have a son and a daughter-in-law in the Army. She was deployed last year, and has very few stories she feels like telling. Both of them might be deployed in '06 or '07.

It feel too close for a TV "drama".

If they make a Hollywood movie about September 11, I will avoid that, too.

The M*A*S*H movie was 1970; the TV show ran from 1972-83; the US was involved in the Korean war from 1950-1953 -- that's a long wait before Hollywood got a-hold of it.

The movie was way better than the TV show too. And if you've never seen the movie, you probably don't know that there are words to the M*A*S*H theme song.

I think I feel strange when someone does movie/TV fiction about 9/11, or Iraq. I'm not sure why. I read the news, and I continue to read a lot of military blogs, having started in 2003 when I happend across "turningtables" at http://turningtables.blogspot.com/, and continuing with "My War" at http://cbftw.blogspot.com/. For a looooong list of mil-blogs, see the Mudville Gazette, far-right edge, down below the various advertisements.

I also have no problems with accounts of 9/11, including the oral histories that have just been released. For example, see today's NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/14/nyreg ... r=homepage

Maybe it's that all of these stories are real, and are told with no special twist to hold our interest.

"Over There" Is "Over Hyped"
I unfortunately wasted an a few minutes of my life to watch "Over There." A new series on FX about US Army Soldiers serving a tour in Iraq. There are a few bad war movies and tv shows, but this one takes the cake. If the inaccuracies they made in this new show was to keep the real enemy from watching and knowing our real tactics, then they did a SUPERB job.

The first thing I noticed that was [messed] up about the tv show was US soldiers on the outskirts of a city behind a small berm in a fire fight with insurgents. I guess you'd have to be in the military to understand how ABSURD a small group of 10 or so soldiers in a pitched battle with insurgents which lasts for 3 days. Where the [heck] is the back up? There are also females in this battle. If the military knows it is sending soldiers into a battle, such as what seems to have happened on the show. There would not be female soldiers on the front lines with the Grunts, in deliberate fire fights and clearing buildings. Also, I would like the miracle drug they must be using to be fighting for 3 days and not eat at all. Then the pathetic soldier, yelling at other soldiers saying they've only been there for about a week why should they die now? Most people I know, who have been at the VERY front have been in very few fire fights. I can't stand when Hollywood they have rediculous stuff like this to keep it exciting, nevermind reality. Not to mention a guy being blown in half and his lower torso is still walking, which I just laughed at the absurdity of that. Then the guy asking his squad leader before an imminent attack they are going to conduct if they have air support? Maybe for people watching at home and seeing planes bombing buildings and such think that US Soldiers rely heavily on air support. However, the actual Grunts rely on other stuff, such as INDIRECT fire too. We don't need air support as if it is impossible to take an objective like this guy seems to be thinking.

That whole scene was pretty much the reason why I haven't found anything else to complain about till the end, because I just turned the channel until it was almost over.
