2005 NFL Training Camp Primer - Washington

WASHINGTON REDSKINS - Rams Park, St. Louis, MO (July 28)
What to Watch: Though the Redskins are proceeding as if Patrick Ramsey will be their starting quarterback come the fall, conventional wisdom suggests that first-round draft pick Jason Campbell (Auburn) will have a better-than-average chance to unseat him. Whoever takes snaps will have to get in sync with a new receiving corps of offseason acquisitions David Patten (Patriots) and Santana Moss (Jets). Center and former Raven Casey Rabach will have to show he was worth the investment, and tackle Jon Jansen must prove he is fully recovered from a torn Achilles that caused him to miss all of 2004. With Rabach and Jansen in the fold, life should get a bit easier for Clinton Portis in the running game. Most of the defensive questions focus on the status of safety Sean Taylor, who faces felony charges for his role in a Sept. 1 assault. Also in question is the status of first-round draft choice and cornerback Carlos Rogers (Auburn), who has a stress fracture in his right foot and a bone bruise in his ankle. The Skins must make sure that holdover cornerback Walt Harris and new safety Pierson Prioleau (ex-Bills) are ready in the event that Taylor and Rogers are unavailable during the season. With Antonio Pierce having defected to the division rival Giants, linebacker LaVar Arrington must show that he can bounce back from the knee injury that sidelined him for most of 2004.

Yeah they pretty much summed it up right there. I definatly think the O-line will be improved this season, which should help the passing game out tons, along with the running game of course. Campbell starting over Ramsey? Doubt it, hope not... Ramsey is still young, he's shown great progress and should develope into a strong starting QB for us.

Welcome to the board CDNSkinsFan... always great to see another Canadian Redskin fan.

Personally, I think this article is straight up vanilla ice.

Couple of 'off' points:

1) Conventional wisdom is that Campbell will unseat Ramsey? Maybe eventually, but isn't this a preview of 2005? He wasn't drafted to be thrown to the wolves... he will be brought along slowly until he is READY. While Redskin fans may not want to admit it, and may struggle to even say it... Mark Brunell will still likely be the #2 QB in 2005. Unlike the fans, management isn't going to 'rush' this project IMHO. (that's all it is -- one guy's opinion)

2) Rabach show he was worth the investment? Huh? This implies that he was paid an inordinate amount of money... he got a good chunk.. about 3 mil per... but that's hardly an earth shattering amount for 2005.

3) Rogers status is in question? this comes from just reading bi-lines and not realizing the full extent of the situation... Rogers practiced through the injury at mini-camp until management sat him down. Gregg Williams himself said, 'the rookie showed the vets something this week by playing on a sprained ankle. The problem we have with Carlos is getting him to take it easy, so today we had to make him sit out, I like that!' ( http://www.the-hogs.net/content/story.php?id=500 ) Rogers injury will be fine in time for camp... now they just have to get him inked to a deal. That's not cause for too much concern IMO. And with Harris waiting in the weeds, we have a much better third to throw in than most NFL teams could.

4) Antonio Pierce leaving means that L.A has to step up? huh? Do you think the guy realizes that they don't even play the same posiion? What does one have to do with the other? It's not like L.A is moving to MIC. Now if you'd taken out L.A's name and inserted Michael Barrow's name... then the exact same sentence could have been used. But logic dictates that if you're talking about the status of a team anda specific position... you should take a little more into account. With Barrow, Lemar Marshall, Robert McCune, Clifton Smith and maybe even Warrick Holdman all vying for the spot... while SOMEONEwill have to step up to fill AP's shoes... it ain't going to be L.A is it?

And of course while they are citing our 'defensive prospectus', they fail to mention that Williams fielded a defense that had but THREE starters in the last game of the year... due to the enormous amount of njuries... and they still finished in the top 3 for defenses. That doesn't bear mentioning in a system defense? it should.

Those are just a couple of de-bunks.

This is not to say that I don't think we have ANYTHING to be concerned with... we do... but this article missed the mark in terms of what that is in my opinion.

But then again, we aren't 'professionals' like these paid sports writers are...

Yes, it is a struggle. Its even painful to admit that Brunell is so close to the starting position but its what should be done. We shouldn't relive past mistakes that were committed to Ramsey with Jason. Infact we should do the exact opposite. I find it interesting how so many people seem so anxious to repeat the same mistakes from previous years.

3 mil per year? Wow...didn't know it was that much. I hope he'll be worth it.

Id also like to add that we have a few safeties who are converted corners. I believe we're better at this position that a lot of people would like to give us credit for. Sure I understand that our system protects our weaknesses but whose system doesn't? Does Marvin Lewis run a scheme that points out a lack of safety help and beg the team to throw deep? Our guys have jobs and they do them well. Walt is a fine corner and will be great for the few games he starts before Carlos takes the reigns.

Lol, before filling someone eleses shoes....Lavar needs to see if his still fit.

Does anyone think this article is credible when they can't even get the camp location right??? I guess I won't be attending training camp this year since it is in MO at Rams Park.

Aside from that mistake what do you disagree with in this article?
