Freddie Mitchell Finds a home

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Freddie Mitchell Finds a home

Chiefs sign ex-Eagles WR Mitchell

NFL.com wire reports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 18, 2005) -- The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent wide receiver Freddie Mitchell, a month after the Eagles released the troublesome player.

Mitchell was at Chiefs minicamp in street clothes but will begin practicing June 19, coach Dick Vermeil said.

"We're very happy to have him here, and I think he's happy to be here," Vermeil said. "He's in a good frame of mind and his attitude is very good."

Mitchell, who played in 63 games in four seasons at Philadelphia, fell into disfavor with Eagles coaches and teammates after making a series of controversial and inflammatory statements.

He insulted the Patriots secondary before the Super Bowl, and also called out New England coach Bill Belichick. He also criticized his teammates for not backing him and blasted quarterback Donovan McNabb for not throwing to him more.

"The plays are going to be there for me to make," Mitchell said after the Chiefs went through a two-hour workout in front of about 15,000 fans at Arrowhead Stadium. "I just want to help the team win and hopefully be utilized catching the ball. So it's going to be good. I'm happy to be here."

Mitchell, picked in the first round out of UCLA in 2001, also labeled himself with a seemingly endless list of self-promoting nicknames like "The People's Champ," "FredEx," and "First-Down Freddie." But he hardly produced, catching 90 passes for 1,263 yards and five touchdowns in his career.

The move comes a day after free-agent receiver Az-Zahir Hakim changed his mind and decided against signing with the Chiefs.

I think it's great, he fits their system very well. He's a WR that doesn't get thrown to, and they're a team that doesn't throw to WRs. Match made in heaven.

Does his hands or his mouth get credit for the move?

His mouth. He would have stuck around if he was quiet and couldn't catch, and if he could catch he probably would have been signed already. I heard he was badmouthing McNabb again today, but I don't really care enough to find out for sure.

Well we won't have to worry about one WR come five! If you all don't remember...we play the chiefs this year.
I am actually a fan of FMitchell though. I love how he talks the talk but trips when he tries to walk the walk.
"I was on the sideline and guys were talking about the score, and then it hit me -- we won by 21. I came in the locker room and I yelled it out, and immediately I just kind of broke down in tears. Because I miss Sean, you know."

Pinkston shouldn't even be considered a WR after he went Alligator body on national television.

I am a big Freddie Mitchell fan, every team should have one.

Guys like Freddie Mitchell are a dying breed, when there used to be a ton of colorful characters in sports now everyone's all humble and quiet and crap... what ever happened to guys like Bill "Spaceman" Lee or Mark "The Bird" Fydrich? (Both baseball pitchers well known for their crazy quotes and antics.)

Not really. But save your money. Who knows? You might be able to afford your own Fred Mitchell as he decides to retire!

Joey Eischen (sp) for the Nationals is pretty good for those kind of quotes.

Why is he even in the league? He had some talent but wasted it in Philthy. Just another mouth glad the Redskins wanted no part of him I think Dyson could be a steal.

Greg Lewis surprised everyone and outplayed Fraudie last year, most notably in the Superbowl. He's the slot guy for now, but I'm hoping he pushes the too-frail-for-the-slot Pinkston right off the roster. The rookie Reggie Brown automagically becomes the #4 guy since there's no one else worth mentioning.

We have Rod Gardner ready for a trade. Interested?

As foolish as that sounds, he would be a better fit than Brown or Pinkston. He won't pull back on a catch like Pinkston, but he probably won't catch it at all.
