Having said that, you'd probably make a good cop.

How could someone make a blanket statement that they hate cops?

I hate cops, always coming to my house when I have a break-in, who do they think they are?

I remember a bunch of kids in High School saying:

"Man, I hate cops, they gave me a DUI the other day and took all my pot!"

Exactly, and some, but not all of these situations are ones in which the person who hates cops was arrested, charged, or otherwise dealt with in a way society would approve of.

There's corruption everywhere...and sometimes there's bad cops...like bad doctors, teachers, Boy Scout Leaders, Priests, etc. It's a fact of life. Everyone hopes everyone's good and honorable...but they aren't and that's a darn shame.

Well...it's this type of class that SkinsChic is taking is just what some people need to see to fully appreciate what police officers do.

As a prosecutor (and for the record, Hailskins666 and I got along very well last year at the tailgate), I have had my share of run-ins with cops that I felt had some "improving" to do. On the other hand, I have had the honor to work with some cops that are truly great people.

I hate contractors that rip people off...but I don't hate all contractors. Such a blanket statement would really not have any value, in my opinion.

I agree...I've learned to respect them a lot more than I did before (not that I disrespected them before but you know what I mean).

No...the classes aren't over yet...I graduate June 9.

Tonight's class is on Narcotics / Paraphanelia and Animal Control.

Hey, maybe they'll do what they did in "Serpico" and pass out doobies for y'all to "sample" . . . just, of course, so you become familiar with the smell and the effects of the drug....right?

In my capacity as a foreman at my state job, I have the opportunity to work with the members of Troop T of the NYS Troopers.
Like any other workplace, you have your bad apples. Yes, there are quotas to meet, particularly towards the end of the month. There are production goals, like any other job. The boss wants to make sure you ain't sleeping through your shift. You need to show some stops, and if you should happen to luck out and catch a DWI... you get some recognition for it. You're only as good as your last arrest, though.
The difference is what the troopers have to see and deal with on a daily basis. So far as my job goes, I may need a Trooper to babysit a lane closure, because John Q. Public respects nothing more than a ticket or a fine for speeding in a work zone. The Troopers are generally the first responders to AA's, and they're the ones who deal with fatals. Working with them, I've seen a veteran cops steel themselves for bloody car seats with missing occupants, men shot in an act of road-rage, begging not to die.
I've also seen how they respond when one of their own die in his own post car after it was struck and caught fire.
They say the flames burned so hot, his 9mm rounds went off while he was beating his own driver's side window in vain, trying to get out. During the autopsy, seven rounds were extracted from the body of the Trooper...all his own. His brethren weeped, openly.
So did I.
It's a hell of a job, and many of them are worthy of your respect.
Like I said, there are some hard cases. Same as any place else.
Terri, if this is the job for you...take good care. What you see out there has a way of aging you.

TC...I'm not looking to get a job with the police department although I think it would be interesting to work there. I just wanted to be more aware of what goes on, etc. It is a very interesting class and I am really enjoying it. No Justice....no samples on Thursday nite but learned a lot about the drugs out there and the Animal Control speaker had some interesting stories to tell also. Good class !

This week....we get to actually DRIVE a police car...sirens and all....woo hoo !!

Well, the driving was fun. It was actually an obstacle course which included parallel parking (thank goodness I just taught Jake how to do that - I passed with flying colors !) It was really fun. Amazing how the sirens and lights, etc. are really a distraction while trying to drive - report your location and chase the bad guy. This week....on to Defense Tactics !! I'm hoping this isn't "hands on" - I don't think I can handle this part !
