Its a real condition....I looked it up in the DSM!
It seems that every year when the draft starts to roll around and the mock drafts come out folks start to lose thier senses. We see a guy on the draft board that we think our team needs and we lose all sense of perspective. Last year it was between Talyor and Winslow and the camps were pretty evenly divided. I remember members of the Winslow camp saying that we had to have Winslow....Had to! Like if we didn't get him the Redskins would cease to exist. This years its already started with Mike Williams. If we don't get Mike Williams then Joe Gibbs will die!
What is it about looking at a guys college career and particularly what the scouts say about a guy that makes us go bonkers? It doesn't seem to matter if the draft is a great class or a weak class (this year) once those names go onto the boards its over. And the more recognizable the name the more dire it becomes to have him.
Why is it that come March and April we forget the history of the draft? We forget the dead-on sure-fire locks that completely went bust. We forget the Tom Brady's, Terrell Owens', the Johnny U's.
I'm not innocent of it. Last year I thought that we would be fools if we passed up on Vince Wilfork. I wasn't sure that I wanted to take him at number 5 overall, but I was willing to if thats what it took. Vince Wilfork ended up going in the 32nd spot, and hasn't overwhelmed anyone though he is a good player. The Giants mortgaged thier future (practically) on Eli Manning and then thier neighbor to the south picks up Ben Roethlisbegr with the number 11 pick and he ends up winning 14 games! The bengals picked William Green over Clinton Portis (a lot of teams passed on him). The Browns picked Courtney Brown over Lavar and Chris Samuels. Courtney Brown looked like the absolute sure-fire could not miss pick of that draft. A guy who was beast, a character guy and a smart dude!
My point is that we all become enamored with a certain player and we perseverate on them. The Draft is a Craps Shoot! It doesn't matter how incredible a guy looks on paper or even game film some times its no guarantee! Great players who are completely unheard of come out of the scrap heap every year and contribute....some even become stars!
I've come to beleive that there are only three worthwhile designations for a potenial draftee; first day, second day, and undrafted FA. I just don't think that the differences in talent level coming out of college are that great. We all practically have the first round prospects memorized but few of us know more than a handful of the guys who are projected third rounders. And I don't think that the guys who go in the bottom of the first round are really that much more talented than the guys in the third round! Sure there are exceptions, but it seems that the more phenominal that player was in college the more likely they are to be a bust.
