This being my first post, I just wanted to let you guys know what a great forum this is, I've finnaly found a place I can talk Skins all year long! I wanted to bring up a name from the past that has been popping up on just about every local news channel since Coach Gibbs decided to come home. It seems that Brian Mithcell is chomping at the bit to come back to Washington, but I'm just not sure that there is a place for him here. I love what Brian Mitchell did for the Redskins and hated to see him go, but I just don't think that he could give us the explosiveness we get from Chad Morton. I look forwared to hearing your thoughts.

He's one of a buttload of talented players that we've allowed to seek greener pastures and they'll excelled doing it...usually at our expense. N.D. Kalu, James Thrash, Steven Davis, Shawn Barber...I could go on, but don't need to. The bretheren here know far too well. Welcome aboard.

I second 74, welcome to the board! I don't think Mitchell is what he used to be. Maybe it was just becuase he was with the Giants last year, but to me, he didnt seem the same. I do miss him, though.

I have to agree with Jake - BMitch just didn't look the same last year. He's getting kind of old (34?) even if he hasn't been an every down back, and it looked like he was just running straight into the pile on kick returns. I just don't see where he would fit in on the team - he and Chad Morton basically fill the same need. Plus, didn't he leave on really bad terms with Snyder? And isn't he still under contract with the Jints? I don't know, I'm sure he'd love to come back and play for Joe but I don't really think it makes sense. But he was on Channel 9 last night with McCants talking about Gibbs so maybe he'd want to return if management feels the same way.

I saw B-Mitch on Channel 9 last night too and was wondering if he was headed back this way or not. It would be really surprising don't you think? Didn't he really talk alot of trash about Snyder the past few years. Not really a smart move on his part.

I think Mitchell was great in his day...with the key words being "in his day". I think Morton is the man for the job in D.C.. While I think Mitchell can fire up folks as well as anyone, he just doesn't have the talent he once had...and he's not worth bringin' back, IMHO.

I think your right about him not leaving on very good terms, and I can't honestly see any scenrario in which he could get on the field as long as Chad Morton is on the roster. Gamers like Brian Mitchell cant stand to watch from the sideline.

Now that Gibbs is back, EVERYONE loves the Skins!

I appreciate what Mitchell did while he was here but I don't see how the team could benefit from his return. He just isn't what he was when he left the Skins a few years back.

Yeah and we still love Mitchell but he has made his mark here and is time for him to retire a Redskin.

It's too bad that B-Mitch couldn't just shut up about his blocking, and not point fingers in his last year as a Giggle and this past season as a NY Midget. It's my guess that he was spoiled by the two years he played for Coach Joe Gibbs. It's a rare team that has very, very good special teams. Rarer still, to find one that has the personnel to make every possible block on returns.
This year, Kansas City had that type of group. Otherwise, you're just a fast, elusive guy who just happens to be in a full-body cast in the local Critical Care dept.

I don't care what he looked like last year. As long as he doesn't ask for too much bring him back. It'd give trhe other team another guy they have to look out for. Plus the way we wronged him the first time we let him go for Deion, I think we owe it to him to give the man one more shot. He'll always be one of my favorite redskins and will always be a redskin at heart. Let the man finish where he belongs, in the ole' burgundy and gold!!

Maybe the best of both worlds would be to bring in B-Mitch as a Special Teams assistant coach. He saw the field as well or better than anyone who ever played the game. He also brought plenty of fire and pep to the locker room. I'm sure he'd listen if Joe started talking. Morton is the future, and Coach Gibbs considers special teams to be the heart of the team.
Who has a bigger heart than Brian Mitchell ?

The question is can he put his vision down on paper into logical x and o sequences to show people how to do it, or was it more of a natural talent that he didn't have to think about but just felt?

I am not saying don't do it, but examine it logically first - can he coach, can he teach what he did and can he design the plays and make them effective?

What could it really hurt to find out ? I betcha Coach Gibbs can evaluate Mitchells' worth in that capacity as well as he can spot a good player with heart.

If he is the special teams coach, that could inevitably destroy the special teams if his x's and o's don't pan out right... I don't really want to go right back to the crappy special teams of the 90's...

and I imagine he will do it well - we didn't have much problems with special teams when he was here before - and at least he has some weapons like Hall, Morton and Johnson

Regarding BMitchell as a coach:

One, I don't think Mitchell thinks he's finished yet. He probably won't be a Giant next year, but knowing his character, he's going to try to be in somebody's camp next year as a returner, not a coach.

Second, why do we assume that he would work out as a coach? In most sports, the superstars don't usually do well as coaches. Instead, it seems that it's the failures/ journeymen who make the best teachers (possibly because they aren't always trying to impose their own style of play on everybody). Not to say that Brian can't be an exception, but he needs to bring more to the table than just his own playing record. (Remember, even Byner has had a few years in the Ravens player development department).

Brian Mitchell is coming off of his worst pro season, and he might think its time to hang them up... If so I am sure Joe would welcome him back with open arms...

No, B-Mitch will NEVER think he's done. That's the fire I'm talkin' about ! I want to say that I never figured him(or said that he should be considered the guy ) to be the guy overseeing our ST play. Never did. Couldn't possibly.
Still, with all the assistants you could hire (in Gibbs' case, HAVE hired, why not hire one that had mastered Gibbs' vision of ST play as an assistant/consultant ? It'd be the same as if they hired DG to be an assistant/consultant on the DB's ! Oh, man. That would be the best of both worlds, IMHO.
