Search for weapons in Iraq ends

Search Ends for Banned Weapons in Iraq

WASHINGTON (Jan. 12) - The search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq ended last month, nearly two years after President Bush sent troops to disarm Saddam Hussein, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

Officials who served with the group charged with hunting banned weapons said the violence in Iraq, coupled with a lack of new information, led them to fold up the effort shortly before Christmas, the newspaper reported.

Charles Duelfer, the CIA special adviser who led the hunt, has returned home, and analysts serving in his Iraq Survey Group (ISG) have returned to CIA headquarters in Virginia, the report said, citing unnamed intelligence officials.

The Post said the findings of an interim report that Duelfer submitted to Congress in September will stand as the ISG's final conclusions, according to a senior intelligence official.

The report concluded that Iraq had no stockpiles of biological and chemical weapons and its nuclear program had decayed before last year's U.S.-led invasion, in findings contrary to prewar assertions of the Bush administration.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, another U.S. intelligence official confirmed that Duelfer was back in Washington, but disputed that the weapons hunt was over.

"This isn't the kind of thing that stops, the search continues," the official told Reuters. "If new information comes in, obviously that would be looked at."

The Washington Post reported that the White House had been reluctant to call off the hunt, holding out the possibility that weapons had been shipped out of Iraq before the war or well hidden inside the country.

Bush, who subsequently said that he was "right to take action" in Iraq, had cited a growing threat from Saddam's weapons of mass destruction as one of the main reasons for overthrowing the Iraqi president.

Whatever. The "war" part ended a while ago too, but a good, good friend just got sent home in pieces.
I'll be at the funeral Saturday.
I still support my President, my country and our troops.
After all, that's what Kenny was doing over there. I owe him that.

I too am sorry for your loss, but why not question why he was over there in the first place? I have not and will never understand how how supporting a war means supporting the troops. To me, they are two completely separate issues. I don't really have much of a problem with someone who supports the war because they think that Saddam Hussein had to go. I might disagree with them, but at least they have a reason for supporting the war. I do however think that supporting the war simply because you want to support the troops is wrong. I think that the best way to support the troops is to demand that they are brought home alive.

To answer Patrickg, I'm one of those idiots you're always knocking, although I tend to not get involved in those types of threads.
Every able-bodied male in my family has served but two. My uncle Chip, who was the only son in the family at the time, and me. I'm handicapped, and they wouldn't have me.
I went into the Army recruiters office when I was 17 with my hearing aides in my pocket, thinking I could fool them.
I'm deeply, deeply patriotic. Kenny gave his life for me and mine, and I will always be thankful to him for that.
Just respect my stance, and don't bother me about it.

Thanks, Chrissy. I do appreciate it.

It's tough losing people that way, but as long as he believed in what he was fighting for, his loss was for a good cause.

And Patrick, is this really the appropriate place to discuss your political views of the war? Express condolences and start a new thread if you wish to go that route. Very inconsiderate of you.

20 years old. . .

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss, TC, you have my sympathies. Yesterday I found out that a good friend of mine from back home died in some pretty terrible circumstances (not in the war). It's not an easy thing to take.

All I'm saying is that supporting a war and supporting the troops are completely seperate. This started off as a political thread and tcwest10 continued it when he expressed his support for the war. I truly am sorry for your loss tcwest10, but the said truth is that it is one of more than a thousand since the war began. The president that you are pledging your support to sent this country to war under false pretenses and far too many young American men and women have sacrificed their lives. And I cannot express this deeply enough. My personal opinion is that patriotism is not supporting everything that the president/government says and does. It is standing up for what you believe is right even if it contradicts the actions of the government. I'm sorry if I have offended you by expressing my opinion, but I don't think that believing that our troops should come home in any way dishonors your the life of your friend.

Wow Patrick could you freaking grow up. TC expressed his opinion and because of recent events asked you to leave it alone. Obviously you are not smart enough to do that. The man is grieving and you have to rub salt in his wounds about your beliefs versus his. I think you need a new dictionary as well. In mine patriotism has nothing to do with your own political agenda. TC is a hard working man who honestly expressed to you his desire to leave this discusion in the dust, your inability to accept that just proves to me what a blinder wearing political activist you are being. This is not about proving your point. This is not about making things appear correctly in your eyes. This is about a man and his personal feelings. You have no right to repeatedly force your opinion down his throat at a time like this.

Sorry mods if this belongs in talking smack but I believe what I said needed to be said, plain and simple.

Patrick, I think what everyone is trying to convey is that this thread isn't a political thread. This thread is moreso dedicated to TC and the passing of a loved one.

Your opinion is just as valid as anyone else but this wasn't the proper time nor place to do it IMHO. Feel free to spark up a new thread anytime you want but lets keep this one for TC.

Thanks man.

i believe in what was done, and i would fight and die for it personally, with no hesitation whatsoever. if you want to be a pacifist hippie, then others are going to take advantage of that in the real world. but if you have the balls to fight and make a stand for what this country is founded in, then chances are, the others will sit back and wonder what the farg happened. which is fine by me. i'd rather drop bombs on another country than to ever have it happen here. sorry if that sounds barbaric. but, i think everyone who died in this war/cause for this country, willfully took an oath to protect from ALL enemies, and no one forced their hand in it, there is no draft anymore. everyone that died in uniform, knew the risk when they took that oath. you are simply mocking the beliefs of the soldiers that died by talking this crap. obviously you have know idea what honor actually means to the dead or their families. my dad was actually drafted in '58 and served overseas. but, it wasn't his choice to be there. regardless of his choice, it was a lot like what the troops who volunteered are facing now in iraq. no one in those countries wanted them there, and there were hostile acts the entire course of his duty, but you know what his reaction is to the whole thing 50 years later, in a similar conflict? "the whole world is a better place for it". so go ahead, whine about those who died because you don't see it fit. thats why people like you will never be running this country. you have the power to sit back and criticize, but don't have the balls to do anything about it. once you have put on that uniform, maybe your opinion will be worth more than a fart in the wind.[end rant] My 2 cents
