How good is DJax? How much will he produce? Will he be an attitude problem?<\/p>\n
Clearly, DJax does not suck. He is not slow either. But how good is he really? Some say he is overrated. Here is one man\u2019s (WalterFootball.com) take before Jackson\u2019s year with Chip Kelly:<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you know how many 100-yard games DeSean Jackson has had since the middle of December 2010? Four. That’s it. Jackson is a one-trick pony who is too scared of taking hits over the middle of the field. He’s a bad guy to have in the locker room. He’s quit on his team before, prompting some of the Eagle players to call him a “candy a**.” Despite all of this, Jackson is still considered a second-tier receiver in many circles. I’ve never understood the infatuation with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
We\u2019ve jumped the gun a bit on attitude but Walt thinks DJax leaves a lot to be desired as a WR1 or even a WR2.<\/p>\n
Some guys\u2019 production stems from a match between talent and system (see Welker with Brady) while others can go get anything even when the defense knows where the ball is going and covers with 2 or even 3 defenders (see Megatron). DJax is probably somewhere in between.<\/p>\n
I say DJax is exceptionally quick and pretty fast. He\u2019s not a big target but is now with a team that figures to have enough weapons both running and passing to put him against one man almost every snap. His production is likely to drop a bit as the Redskins will spread the ball around and probably not run as many plays as the Eagles did last year with Kelly \u2013 but he should be open a lot.<\/p>\n
The bigger concern is attitude. It has been said (and I agree) that big money does not change a guy \u2013 it just makes him more of what he already is. See Albert Haynesworth. If DJax really is this guy \u2026<\/p>\n
“The fact is, [Jackson] was a ‘me-guy’ with an attitude problem and [Maclin] is the complete opposite, a team guy, a great character guy you go to war with,” said one source. “Funny how [Jackson] has this anti-bully thing and he thought he could push [Kelly] around; he found out otherwise. His being cut had nothing to do with the gang stuff. The team knew it. Everyone knew he had ‘ties.’ Those were his guys. That’s okay. What put him out was his selfishness. He can try and spin it all he wants how he’s ‘a team player.’ He’s not. I’ll put it this way, when it came out [March 28] that [Jackson] was released, more than a few guys were happy it happened. They said ‘good riddance.’ He had no real connection with anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2026 then there will be trouble at Redskins Park.<\/p>\n
I agree with what money does and does not do to a player. The question is this: Is the DJax the Redskins just signed the guy I saw quit against Seattle 2 years ago and the one anonymously described above or is he a guy who just grew up and is now ready to be even more of a grown up? The evidence leans toward the former but I hold out hope that we have gotten him at just the right time for a reasonable price.<\/p>\n
