Could it really have been that long ago? Is it proper to remember things that were so horrible that you pushed them out of your mind even then?

By 9 a.m., the entire news cycle had turned it’s attention to downtown New York. A plane crash. Was it an accident? Was it a terrorist attack? At that point, nobody knew. Many did think it was an accident.

Plane Two

Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower, live on television screens across the country. There was no more room for doubt. America had been attacked.

Ultimately it turned out that at 8:46 a.m., that first plane had been American Airlines Flight 11. It had been hijacked shortly after takeoff from Boston. It slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.

By 9:10 a.m. millions watched in horror from around the globe, as two giant buildings burned intensely.

Third & Fourth

At 9:37 a.m., a third hijacked plane, American Airlines Flight 77, crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. It struck the heart of the nation’s military command. Twenty-six minutes later, at 10:03 a.m., a fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93, went down in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Its passengers, having learned of the other attacks through phone calls to loved ones, stormed the cockpit in an effort to retake the plane. Many believe their actions prevented the hijackers from reaching their intended target, likely the U.S. Capitol or the White House.

Towers Collapse

In New York, the towers could not withstand the damage and the fires that followed. The South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m., the North Tower at 10:28 a.m. Nearly 2,750 people died at the World Trade Center alone. Hundreds of firefighters and police officers who ran toward the danger while others fled.

In total, the attacks that day claimed the lives of 2,977 people, not counting the 19 hijackers. The victims spanned nearly every background, profession, and walk of life.

Unity & Grief

What followed in the days and weeks after was, for many, a rare moment of national unity amid unimaginable grief. Strangers helped strangers. First-responders worked around the clock at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and the Shanksville crash site. Many risked losing their own health in the process. Flags appeared on porches and car windows across the country. For a brief window, the usual divisions of American life gave way to something more shared: shock, sorrow, and resolve.

Twenty-five years later, the images of that morning remain seared into the memory of everyone who witnessed them. September 11 forever became 9/11. Not just as a date on the calendar, but a permanent marker of before and after in the American story.

NFL Reaction

In the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue faced intense pressure from many owners who wanted the league to play its Week 2 games as a show of resolve and normalcy. Players, particularly those from the New York Jets and Giants, strongly opposed the idea.

After consulting owners, the NFL Players Association, and security officials, Tagliabue postponed the entire slate of games on September 13. It marked the first time the NFL had canceled a full week of games for non-labor reasons. Tagliabue later explained that the unprecedented loss of life made it inappropriate to proceed so soon, stating the league’s priority was to pause, grieve, and support those affected.

The postponed contests were eventually rescheduled for the end of the regular season, which pushed the playoffs back a week and moved Super Bowl XXXVI into February.

When the NFL returned to the field on September 23, stadiums across the country featured extensive patriotic displays, large American flags, moments of silence, and tributes to victims and first-responders. The league’s measured decision to wait, followed by its visible displays of unity upon returning, are viewed as one of the more thoughtful institutional responses to the tragedy.

Redskins At The Time

At that time, the Washington Redskins were in the opening weeks of Marty Schottenheimer’s only season as head coach and director of football operations. They had played just one game — a 30-3 loss at the San Diego Chargers on September 9 — and stood at 0-1.

Jeff George was the starting quarterback. The roster featured running back Stephen Davis as the offensive centerpiece, with receivers Michael Westbrook and rookie Rod Gardner. The defense featured young stars Champ Bailey and LaVar Arrington, aswell as veteran defensive end Bruce Smith.

Schedule Changes

The team was originally scheduled to host the Arizona Cardinals at FedExField on September 16. Because of the attacks, that game was postponed and later played as the season finale on January 6, 2002. Washington won that game 20-17 for their fifth straight victory. They finished the season at 8-8 – a respectable mark given their 0-5 start – but Schottenheimer was surprisingly let go anyway.

Washington’s next actual contest after the tragedy became a Monday Night Football blowout loss at Green Bay on September 24 (0-37), after which George was benched in favor of Tony Banks.

Located so close to the Pentagon, the Redskins felt the tragedy especially deeply. Players visited Arlington National Cemetery for a memorial service in the days that followed. Owner Daniel Snyder quickly established a Redskins Relief Fund with an initial $250,000 team donation to support families of Pentagon victims.

Schottenheimer would later recall, “a great sense of both sadness and frustration” and the need to comfort players and staff while still trying to focus on the team.

Twenty-five years ago today, 9/11, the civilized world as we knew it changed forever – it affected absolutely everything including the NFL and the Redskins.
