The Marcus Mariota injury update Commanders fans have been waiting for finally arrived Sunday, and it’s better than feared. Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Mariota suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee, not the more serious tear many worried about after Friday’s preseason opener against Miami<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happened<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mariota went down in the first quarter of Washington’s 20-7 win, pivoting awkwardly on his right leg while handing off to rookie running back Kaytron Allen. He walked off under his own power, visited the medical tent, then didn’t return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commanders spent the weekend reviewing imaging before confirming the diagnosis Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Good News<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An MCL sprain, while still serious enough to end his preseason, is a significantly better outcome than a torn ACL or meniscus. Mariota will miss Washington’s final two exhibition games, at Detroit and at Baltimore, but Quinn sounded confident about the bigger picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked about Mariota’s status for the regular-season opener at Philadelphia on September 13, Quinn said simply, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re optimistic he’ll be ready at that time.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Quinn also confirmed Washington isn’t bringing in outside quarterback help. They will instead hand extended reps to Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis<\/a> over the next two preseason games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Injury Significance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mariota has been a genuinely reliable safety net behind Daniels since arriving in Washington. Last season alone he started eight games, throwing for 1,695 yards and 10 touchdowns in relief duty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He’s twice stepped in for an injured Daniels and delivered wins. He threw a game-winning touchdown pass at Dallas with two seconds left in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping that insurance policy intact for Week 1 is a real, meaningful outcome for Washington’s season. Instead of going after another backup to fill the role, they can likely roll the dice<\/em> and stick with Sam Hartman or Athan Kaliakmanis for a game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeff Driskel was brought in last year when Mariota got hurt, but Josh Johnson got the start<\/a>. Driskel is still available if they wanted to make a similar move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Injury News<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Quinn also had encouraging updates elsewhere on the injury front, saying both center Nick Allegretti (calf) and tight end John Bates (hamstring) are on track to return to practice on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trey Amos will still be held out a little longer for his ankle injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
