Many were worried that there wasn’t a strong enough candidate to step in should WR1 Terry McLaurin get injured for any extended period. That ended with the signing of Stefon Diggs.

The Commanders wide receivers group looks significantly stronger after the key late addition. In fact it looks like a great group when everybody but Terry ostensibly takes a step back on the depth chart.

Top of the Depth Chart

McLaurin remains the top option. The veteran returns healthy after a limited 2025 season in which he posted 38 catches for 582 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. He had five consecutive seasons with over 1000 yards previous to 2025.

Diggs, a Maryland native and four-time Pro Bowler, showed last season that he still has what it takes to lead a team in receiving. THe 32-year old recorded 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns with the Patriots in 2025.

McLaurin and Diggs could end up forming one of the strongest receiving duos in the league. McLaurin will likely be the primary outside threat and Diggs will serve as a versatile complement who can work both outside and in the slot.

The over-30 pairing gives quarterback Jayden Daniels two veteran proven Pro Bowl targets. That alone has the potential to vault this offense to a higher level.

Competition for Remaining Spots

Behind the top two, several players will obviously battle for roster roles and snap counts. Most projections expect Washington to keep six or seven receivers.

2026 draftee Antonio Williams has impressed people already. He seems poised to step in and get a shot at being the slot receiver. Whether successful or not, he isn’t going anywhere and has likely already shown too much to be left on a practice squad unprotected.

That’s three slots down.

The Battle

Luke McCaffrey , Dyami Brown, Treylon Burks, and Jaylin Lane will likely battle for the remaining positions. Van Jefferson and Jacoby Jones are in tough, but will compete for a spot.

Special Teams Leg Up

Lane was fantastic on special teams last year. In fact, he led the league in punt return touchdowns with two. When you score twice on teams, a roster spot is yours unless something better appears. He had 23 returns for 314 yards, with the longest being a 90-yard touchdown. He also had 16 receptions for 225 yards and proved that he can play receiver too.

Like Lane, McCaffrey’s strongest shout for a roster spot may be his special teams play. He was the designated kick returner last year, and fared pretty well. He didn’t take any to the house, but averaged nearly 30 yards per return (29.6). He had 26 returns for 769 yards with a long of 58.

He did have touchdowns receiving the ball. Three of them. He had 203 yards on 11 receptions too. MCCaffrey will be looked upon to take a leap forward in year three, but he seems likely to be one of the chosen receivers with all that’s going in his favor.

Rounding Things Out

Dyami might be the most interesting one to watch through training camp and preseason. He returns to the Commanders after just a season away in Jacksonville. Brown was very serviceable in his four seasons with Washington, and had 30 catches in 2024. He also might be the biggest deep threat on the roster. Does that give him the 6th or 7th spot?

Treylon Burks will have something to say about that. He did a good job last season getting thrown in to the mix. He caught ten balls for 130 yards, and while he only had one touchdown, it was one of the best catches of 2025. This is Burks’ fifth NFL season, and he’s going to have to have his best training camp to date if he wants to make the roster.

Some Tough Decisions Ahead

In all likelihood, the top five spots fall to McLaurin, Diggs, Williams, Lane, and McCaffrey.

Brown and Burks battle it out for the 6th spot on the depth chart. Or establish a need to keep seven guys.

One of these guys potentially gets cut. That would seem to indicate the Commanders have a strong group, because both are proven contributors.

Jones goes to the practice squad.

Brown or Burks could end up there too, but they may get picked up by someone else if they are waived. Under NFL rules, teams can sign up to six veteran players with unlimited accrued seasons to their practice squad.

Outlook for 2026

With Daniels at the helm, McLaurin and Diggs have the on-paper potential to give defenses fits. Few teams have two cornerbacks good enough to cover both. Throw a productive Chig Okonkwo into the mix and the passing offense could be the best in years.

Training camp and the preseason will cement each player’s role, but the 2026 Commanders wide receivers enter the season in far better shape than last year.

The receiver room has the potential to be Washington’s strongest unit.

Author’s Notes:

Here are the Practice Squad rules:

Veteran Limit: The NFL allows up to six players with any amount of prior experience (accrued seasons) on a 16-player practice squad.

Waiver Process: A veteran with multiple accrued seasons, must first pass through the official waiver/release cycle before signing.

Re-signing: If another NFL team does not claim a player off waivers, that player is free to sign directly to the practice squad.

Much ado had been made about the 2026 Commanders wide receivers room this offseason.
