The 1939 game ended in a decisive 44-14 victory for Washington over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The iconic moment happened in the third quarter when Frank Filchock dropped back under pressure and unleashed a long bomb. Andy Farkas caught it and sprinted the rest of the way for a breathtaking 99-yard touchdown. Farkas also added an 11-yard rushing touchdown. Dick Todd also scored twice for the Redskins, once on a 19 yard pass from Filchock, and another on a 60 yard run..

The Redskins were in control most of the afternoon. They moved the ball effectively on offense and kept Pittsburgh’s attack in check. The combination of big plays through the air and solid ground control created constant problems for the Pirates.

Other Key Game Moments

Frank Filchock threw a 99-yard touchdown pass to Andy Farkas.

60 yard touchdown run from Dick Todd

Jimmy German scored twice for Washington on runs of 14 and 15 yards.

Ed Justice had a 33 yard touchdown run for the Redskins.

Final score: Redskins 44, Pirates 14.

That record strike came from Washington’s own end zone, yet turned into pure magic. In addition, the Redskins put together a complete performance. They outgained Pittsburgh significantly 395 yards to 260, and took advantage of every opportunity. The defense created pressure while the offense mixed runs and passes to wear down the visitors.

Why It Matters

This game still matters to fans because that 99-yard bomb remains an untouched piece of NFL and Redskins lore. It captures the excitement of early franchise football and reminds longtime supporters of those unforgettable “you had to be there” moments.

On this Redskins throwback for October 15, the Washington Redskins made NFL history with one of the most spectacular plays the league has ever seen.
