On this Redskins throwback for November 27th, the Washington fans fondly remember the thrashing of the New York Giants 72-41<\/a>. This set the NFL record for the highest-scoring game in league history in 1966.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Redskins exploded for an unprecedented offensive performance, putting up points in bunches. The Giants scored 41 points of their own and somehow still got blown out. Washington was just too much on that 1966 Thanksgiving weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Redskins’ Brig Owens scored two defensive touchdowns – a 62 yard defensive fumble return, and a 60-yard interception return. Washington also scored on a 52-yard punt return from Rickie Harris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonny Jurgensen threw 3 touchdown passes – from 5 yards, 32 yards, and a 74 yard beauty to Charley Taylor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington also scored 4 times on the ground – A.D. Whitfield with two, and Joe Don Loney and Bobby Mitchell with one each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Redskins scored an incredible 10 touchdowns in the contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the lopsided score, the Giants had 9 more first downs than Washington, as well as outgaining them by 58 yards (389 vs 341). It was the 6 turnovers for New York that proved to be their undoing. The Giants played two quarterbacks on the day – Gary Wood and Tom Kennedy. Both had more passing yards than Jurgensen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
