The Commanders vs Giants Week 15 matchup delivered long-awaited relief for Washington. The Commanders defeated the New York Giants 29-21 on Sunday, finally snapping an eight-game losing streak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There’s nothing like a winning locker room,” said quarterback Marcus Mariota. “It’s hard to go two months without winning a football game.” Indeed, the Commanders (4-10) had not tasted victory since October 5. Meanwhile, the Giants (2-12) extended their own misery, losing their eighth straight game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Washington responded boldly after a 31-0 shutout loss in Minnesota. Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt ran for a touchdown to get things going. Then fellow rookie Jaylin Lane electrified the team with a 63-yard punt return for a score. Coach Dan Quinn awarded Lane the game ball after the performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The guys, it comes down to effort,” Lane said. “Punt returns are the longest play in football, so shoutout to the guys.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Early in the fourth quarter, Mariota found Terry McLaurin on a thrilling 51-yard catch-and-run touchdown. That play, moreover, proved to be the decisive moment of the game. Mariota finished 10 of 19 for 211 yards. Croskey-Merritt added 96 yards on the ground to support the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It feels amazing to win a football game,” McLaurin said. “It’s been a long season, but you come out here and you get a win and you really appreciate that feeling.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Washington’s defense also rose to the occasion. Von Miller sacked Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to reach 136.5 career sacks. That milestone pushed Miller past Jared Allen into 12th place on the all-time sack list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dart finished 20 of 36 for 246 yards with two touchdown passes to Tyrone Tracy and Wan’Dale Robinson. A costly interception hurt the Giants at a critical moment. Trainers escorted Dart from the field in the fourth quarter for a concussion evaluation after a designed run. He cleared protocol quickly but was visibly frustrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I was definitely surprised,” Dart said. “I didn’t feel like it was that big of a hit at all.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
