The Washington Commanders suffered tough news Monday as Austin Ekeler out for the season<\/em> speculations, became reality. The team placed both the veteran running back and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. on Injured Reserve. Both players sustained season-ending injuries during Thursday night’s loss to the Green Bay Packers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ekeler Tears Achilles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Austin Ekeler’s season-ending injury occurred during what appeared to be a routine play against Green Bay. The veteran running back suffered a torn Achilles tendon that will require surgery and extensive rehabilitation. Ekeler was to be a key offensive weapon for Washington in 2025, providing both rushing and receiving production from the backfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The injury represents a significant blow to the Commanders’ offensive plans, as Ekeler brought a skill set that is tough to find in a single player. He also brought veteran leadership and versatility that will be difficult to replace immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deatrich Wise Jr. Also Lost for Season<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. is also out for the season after suffering a serious left quadriceps injury. Wise was injured while trying to block an extra-point attempt in the first half. He had to be carted off the field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The veteran end was arguably the best edge rusher in Washington’s defensive line rotation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head coach Dan Quinn didn’t hide his disappointment when addressing the injuries Monday. Quinn said he was “bummed for” Ekeler and Wise, noting that both players have “made a tremendous impact on our team, on the field and off the field.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losing both Ekeler and Wise in the same game creates immediate roster challenges that the Commanders addressed with several moves Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commanders Sign Holmes and Moore as Replacements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To fill the roster voids, Washington signed defensive end Jalyn Holmes and wide receiver Chris Moore to the active roster. Holmes previously played for the Commanders in 2023, appearing in 11 regular season games and three playoff contests while recording two sacks and 17 total tackles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moore earned his promotion after spending time on Washington’s practice squad since December 2024. The wide receiver caught one pass for 34 yards after being elevated for the season opener against the Giants. His addition brings Washington’s receiving corps back to full strength after entering the season with only five wideouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
