Safety Percy Butler signs an extension for another season that keeps the special teams standout in burgundy and gold through 2026. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Commanders have agreed to terms on a one-year extension with safety Percy Butler, per source. Locking up a special teams standout.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extension covers one year for Butler, who entered the final year of his rookie deal. The Commanders haven’t announced financial terms of the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Butler joined Washington as a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 50 regular season and playoff games over his first three seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Butler Signs Extension Despite Decrease in Snaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Louisiana product’s usage changed in head coach Dan Quinn’s system. Butler started 13 games in 2023 under the previous regime. His defensive snaps decreased significantly in Quinn’s first season. However, Butler’s special teams value seemed to increase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 25-year-old excels as a gunner in Washington’s punt unit. His contributions on special teams made him invaluable to coordinator Larry Izzo’s units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depth Chart Implications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Commanders made several safety moves this offseason. They signed veteran Will Harris in free agency and added undrafted rookie Robert McDaniel. Quan Martin returns as a projected starter after a solid 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeremy Chinn’s departure in free agency may create opportunities for increased playing time. Butler will compete for defensive snaps while maintaining his core special teams role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Butler is one of the few remaining draft picks<\/a> from the Ron Rivera era. His retention signals the coaching staff’s confidence in his abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
