It’s a sad day for Washington fans, as one of the greatest defensive players in team history has passed away. Defensive tackle Dave Butz died on Friday.<\/p>\n

He was 72 years old.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\"Dave<\/a><\/p>\n

A man whose size was surpassed only by his heart, the 6’8″ Redskins alumnus often appeared to be a man amongst boys. He was with the Redskins from 1975 to 1988. When he retired from the game, he was the oldest player in the NFL at 38.<\/p>\n

Many players and fans expressed their adoration and love for Butz on social media – including former teammate Joe Theismann<\/a>:<\/p>\n

“Lost a dear friend today. Dave Butz. Dave Mark Mosley and I used to ride to games together. A true gentle giant. Rest In Peace my friend.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The organization also posted their condolences:<\/p>\n

“We’re heartbroken over the loss of Washington Legend Dave Butz… a 2x Super Bowl champion and member of our Ring of Fame and 90 Greatest list. Sending our deepest condolences to Dave’s family and friends.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Career<\/h2>\n

Butz played college football for Purdue<\/a> and was a finalist for the Lombardi Award in 1972.<\/p>\n

He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 5th overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft, but was picked up by Washington after two years.<\/p>\n

Butz won two Super Bowls with the Redskins. He has the third most sacks<\/a> (59.5) in Washington franchise history and was named one of the organization’s 70 greatest players<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Different Cat<\/h2>\n

Butz missed just four games in his 16-year NFL career.<\/p>\n

\"Dave<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1987, Dave checked himself out of a hospital so that he could play against the New York Jets. He was sick and had lost as much as 25-30 pounds.<\/p>\n

He made a game-saving tackle late in the game, and won a game ball. Then he went back to the hospital.<\/p>\n

True warrior spirit.<\/p>\n

He was one of a kind.<\/p>\n
