Yet another person has become a victim of all that is wrong in the health care industry. Jason Campbell, Quarterback of the Washington Redskins found an unwelcome surprise waiting for him in his mailbox today.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was shocked; I mean, I didn\u2019t even know there was anything wrong.\u201d Said Campbell.<\/p>\n
Oh, but there was something wrong; something terribly, terribly wrong. Jason Campbell\u2019s health insurance\u2026had been canceled.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey said I had some kind of pre-existing condition that made me ineligible for \u2018continued coverage\u2019\u201d said Campbell, still holding the letter he had received, \u201cSomething about \u2018Insufficient Offensive Linemenitus.\u2019 I didn\u2019t even know I was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n
Insufficient Offensive Linemenitus, or IOL, is a breakdown of the protective barrier that allows Quarterbacks to remain healthy and upright during football games.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a terrible disease and I\u2019m still living with the after effects\u201d said Patrick Ramsey, a onetime IOL sufferer and former Redskins Quarterback.<\/p>\n
IOL is a debilitating condition that can seriously affect a Quarterback\u2019s job performance, and most sufferers don\u2019t last very long in their current employment. Symptoms can start off mild; such as bruising, swelling, grass-stains, nervousness and difficulty controlling one\u2019s bowels. More serious sufferers may face ligament damage, broken bones, a marked inability to stand in the pocket with both feet firmly planted (a condition often referred to as ‘happy feet’),<\/span> and in some cases excessive damage to the brain from repetitive concussions.<\/p>\n \u201cIt affected my job performance, certainly,\u201d said Ramsey, \u201cbut I\u2019m doing better now. I still flinch whenever I hear the word \u2018hut\u2019 or \u2018hike.\u2019 My wife asked me the other day if I wanted to \u2018hike on down to the Sunglass hut\u2019 with her, and I locked myself in the bathroom for three days. At least I didn\u2019t vomit this time.\u201d<\/p>\n Ramsey is currently recovering from his IOL and is actively seeking employment with another football team, but this disease didn\u2019t just affect his professional life. \u201cLast Christmas, my kids came running in to hug me. I threw my mug of eggnog out of bounds and spent the next five minutes curled into the fetal position yelling \u2018Blow the whistle! Blow the whistle!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n The League has taken some steps to help Quarterbacks suffering from IOL<\/p>\n \u201cWe have encouraged the officials to recognize when a Quarterback may be suffering from IOL,\u201d said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell “We are sensitive to people with disabilities, and the officials need to protect these guys as if they were crippled or retarded, er, sorry, physically or developmentally challenged<\/em>.”<\/p>\n Commissioner Goodell points to one Tom Brady, the Quarterback of the New England Patriots, as a shining example of workplace sensitivity.<\/p>\n \u201cWe messed up and he got hurt last year. We lost him for the whole season,\u201d said Goodell \u201cIf you notice this year, we aren\u2019t letting anybody touch him; not even slightly. We have to compensate for our mistake from last year, so if he wants a flag, we are certainly going to give him one.\u201d<\/p>\n When asked about Jason Campbell, Goodell seemed a little less sympathetic.<\/p>\n \u201cNobody cares about the Redskins,\u201d said Goodell, \u201cHave you seen that little punk running the team? Losing his Quarterback might actually be doing him a favor; he\u2019s no Tom Brady, that\u2019s for sure. Did you know Tom\u2019s married to a super-model? What\u2019s this Campbell kid got that makes you think he deserves special treatment?\u201d<\/p>\n In the meantime, Campbell says he still expects to play.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat else can I do?\u201d asked Campbell, \u201cI can\u2019t just quit.
