Each week, THN will choose their three players of the game at each position. Here are week five’s selections: <\/p>\n
Offense: Mark Brunell<\/p>\n
Although it did not necessarily show on the stat sheet, Brunell had his most accurate game of the season against Denver. Brunell completed 30 passes, a season high, but also had a season high 23 incomplete passes. That is a result of Brunell doing a very good job of avoiding pressure throughout the game and throwing the ball away when all the receivers were covered.<\/p>\n
Brunell excelled in passing situations when forced to roll out to his left compared to his right side. He led the Redskins offense to 28 first downs and threw for 322 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Brunell also received great protection from the offensive line. He had plenty of time to pass and was not sacked during the game. Brunell ran the ball four times for 17 yards and two first downs. Brunell\u2019s 322 passing yards were the most since his 325-yard performance against the Dallas Cowboys during Week 3 of the 2004 season.<\/p>\n
Defense: Carlos Rogers<\/p>\n
Rogers made his second career NFL start and improved mightily. He allowed less big plays and tied Lemar Marshall and Warrick Holdman with a team-high 4 tackles. Rogers looked more aggressive and had good anticipation on running situations. The 9th overall selection in the 2005 Draft also downed a punt at Denver\u2019s two yard line during the third quarter.<\/p>\n
The Redskins defense only allowed 92 passing yards from Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer.<\/p>\n
Special Teams: Chris Clemons<\/p>\n
The Redskins had a rather unspectacular performance on special teams against the Denver Broncos but it did receive a spark in the fourth quarter in the form of Chris Clemons. Clemons blew past Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams and blocked a Todd Sauerbrun punt. The ball was recovered at the Denver 40 yard line and led to a 36-yard field goal by kicker Nick Novak, cutting the Broncos lead to eight points. Clemons also registered a special teams tackle.<\/p>\n
The last time the Redskins blocked a punt was on November 7th, 2004 against the Detroit Lions.<\/p>\n
