A dynamic, physical runner with elite vision and burst, he combined elite production with one of the most colorful personalities of his era.

Early Life and College Career

Portis grew up in Gainesville, Florida, and starred at Gainesville High School. At the University of Miami (1999–2001), he became a key piece of the Hurricanes’ powerhouse teams. Career college totals: 2,523 rushing yards on 440 carries (5.7 yards per attempt) and 20 rushing touchdowns, plus receiving contributions.

He led the team in rushing multiple times and finished fourth on Miami’s all-time rushing list. His junior season (2001) was his best: 1,200 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns during the regular season, followed by 104 yards and a touchdown in the Rose Bowl victory over Nebraska that clinched the BCS national championship. He earned first-team All-Big East and third-team All-American honors before declaring for the NFL Draft.

A Rookie Sensation in Denver

Portis arrived in the NFL with total confidence. Before the 2002 draft, he told teams to trade up, take him third overall, and watch him win Rookie of the Year.

“Everyone looked at me like I was crazy,” he said.

Denver took him 51st overall instead, and he made good on the boast anyway, rushing for 1,508 yards and 17 total touchdowns as a rookie to claim the award outright.

The Trade for Champ Bailey

Washington acquired Portis in one of the biggest trades in franchise history. Washington sent All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey and a second-round pick to Denver in 2004.

New/returning head coach Joe Gibbs wanted a workhorse back, and Portis delivered immediately, becoming the engine of Washington’s offense for the next seven seasons.

Every Thursday Was a Show

Portis became just as famous for his weekly press conferences as for his production on the field, regularly showing up in full costume to play a rotating cast of original characters. Over the years, reporters met “Sheriff Gonna Getcha,” “Dolla Bill,” “Coach Janky Spanky,” “Inspector Two-Two,” “Southeast Jerome,” “Bro Sweets,” “Dr. I Don’t Know,” and a character simply known as “Choo-Choo,” who Portis committed to so fully he spoke about himself in the third person.

He also occasionally leaned on pop culture, doing full impressions of “Dolemite” and “Napoleon Dynamite” for good measure. “Coach Janky Spanky” wore a headset and whistle and insisted he deserved a shot at Gibbs’ job. It became one of the most anticipated weekly rituals in the NFL, entirely of Portis’ own invention.

A Workhorse With Real Toughness

The characters never overshadowed the football. Portis made the Pro Bowl again in 2008, earning Second-team All-Pro honors the same year, and he built a genuine reputation as one of the league’s best pass-blocking running backs, a skill that rarely gets a player noticed. He took pride in the physical side of the game, reportedly arguing constantly with teammates Sean Taylor and Ryan Clark over who hit harder.

By the time Washington released him in 2011, he’d piled up 6,824 rushing yards in burgundy and gold, trailing only John Riggins in franchise history. He had 46 touchdowns while adding significant receiving production. Career highlights in Washington included:

2005: 1,516 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns

2007: 1,262 yards and 11 touchdowns

2008: 1,487 yards and 9 touchdowns (Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro)

His 2007 Washington season – 325 attempts – led the NFL in rushing attempts.

He was durable early on, averaging over 80 rushing yards per game for much of his tenure, and ranked second in franchise history in rushing yards behind John Riggins at the time of his retirement.

Injuries (concussions, abdomen, groin) limited him to eight games in 2009 and five in 2010. Washington released him in February 2011.

Career NFL totals (113 games): 2,230 carries for 9,923 rushing yards (4.4 average) and 75 rushing touchdowns, plus 247 receptions for 2,018 yards and 5 receiving touchdowns.

He finished with six 1,000-yard rushing seasons and remains one of only a handful of backs to post multiple 1,500-yard seasons early in his career.

Life After Football

Portis officially retired at Redskins Park in 2012, delivering an emotional, unscripted 25-minute speech, stopping to collect himself several times. Owner Dan Snyder praised his all-around game bluntly: “He blocked and played physical football like no one else.” Portis stayed out of coaching for over a decade before returning to the game in 2025, joining Delaware State as the program’s running backs coach.

He has remained connected to the Washington franchise (included among the 80/90 Greatest) and has spoken candidly in later years about the physical toll of the game, the challenges of life after football, and his experiences in the nation’s capital.

Portis left the game as a highly productive, physical runner who delivered multiple elite seasons and one of the most memorable personalities of the 2000s NFL. His combination of on-field excellence, and unmatched entertainment value made him a standout figure in Washington football history.

Career Statistics

<colgroup>
<col style="width:20%;"/>
<col style="width:15%;"/>
<col style="width:8%;"/>
<col style="width:11%;"/>
<col style="width:13%;"/>
<col style="width:10%;"/>
<col style="width:9%;"/>
<col style="width:14%;"/>
</colgroup>

Team

Year

G

Att

Yds

Avg

TD

Rec Yds

Denver

2002

16

273

1,508

5.5

15

364

Denver

2003

13

290

1,591

5.5

14

314

Washington

2004

15

343

1,315

3.8

5

235

Washington

2005

16

352

1,516

4.3

11

216

Washington

2006

8

127

523

4.1

7

170

Washington

2007

16

325

1,262

3.9

11

389

Washington

2008

16

342

1,487

4.3

9

218

Washington

2009

8

124

494

4.0

1

57

Washington

2010

5

54

227

4.2

2

55

Career Total

9 seasons

113

2,230

9,923

4.4

75

2,018

G = Games played, Att = Rushing attempts, Yds = Rushing yards, Avg = Yards per carry, TD = Rushing touchdowns, Rec Yds = Receiving yards.
