He built his legend on hating the Dallas Cowboys, one Roger Staubach jab at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Talbert Brothers, One Texas Team<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talbert grew up in Pascagoula, Mississippi, before his family moved to Texas. He starred at Texas City High School, then followed his older brothers Don and Charlie to the University of Texas. He won a national championship as a freshman in 1963. He earned All-Southwest Conference honors in 1965. Diron, Don and Charlie are all in the Longhorn&#8217;s Hall of Honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rams drafted Diron in the fifth round &#8211; 66th overall &#8211; in the 1966 Draft. However, he returned to Texas for a fifth season. He was also drafted in the 2nd round (17th overall) of the 1966 AFL Redshirt draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding a Home in Los Angeles, Then Washington<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talbert lost most of his rookie season to a knee injury. He recovered and found his footing playing alongside Hall of Famers Merlin Olsen and Deacon Jones. Jones taught him the head-slap move that defined the era. By 1971, Talbert was a full-time starter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was with the Rams from 1967 to 1970, under coach <a href=\"https:\/\/the-hogs.net\/blogs\/washington-commanders-franchise-facts\/\">George Allen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1971, new Redskins head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/the-hogs.net\/blogs\/redskins-george-allen\/\">George Allen<\/a> orchestrated a blockbuster trade. Washington sent players and EIGHT picks to Los Angeles. In return, they landed Talbert, linebackers Jack Pardee, Myron Pottios, and Maxie Baughan, and guard John Wilbur. The deal became the backbone of Allen&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Over the Hill Gang<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Anchor of the Over the Hill Gang<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talbert started almost every game Washington played for seven straight seasons. From 1971 through 1977, he missed just one start out of 98 possible games. Warrior mentality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He topped 10 sacks three separate times, including a career-high 12.5 in 1976. In 1975, he sacked Giants quarterback Craig Morton four times in a single game, still a franchise record. He helped anchor Washington&#8217;s defense through its first Super Bowl trip, a loss to Miami in Super Bowl VII following the 1972 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Staubach Feud<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No single storyline defined Talbert more than his rivalry with Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach. It began after Washington&#8217;s 26-3 win over Dallas in the 1972 NFC Championship Game. Talbert needled Staubach in the press afterward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They just had the wrong guy in there,&#8221; he said, suggesting backup Craig Morton gave Washington a tougher fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The feud never cooled. &#8220;We wouldn&#8217;t even talk to them in the off-season,&#8221; Talbert said of the Cowboys years later. Before one game, he shook every captain&#8217;s hand at the coin toss except Staubach&#8217;s, just to needle him further. Talbert later brushed it off as showmanship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It was just game hype,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staubach didn&#8217;t always see it that way. Years later, at a postseason banquet, he reportedly asked Talbert directly why he seemed to hate him so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 1978, Talbert was still throwing jabs. &#8220;I don&#8217;t have a lot of love for Dallas,&#8221; he told the Washington Post that year, &#8220;and I&#8217;m sure they don&#8217;t have a lot of love for me.&#8221; Even decades later, the two men reportedly still won&#8217;t shake hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the way it should be. All Redskins fans worth their salt, should NOT talk with Cowboys fans &#8211; at least on Gameday. <a href=\"https:\/\/the-hogs.net\/blogs\/dexter-manley-profile\/\">Dexter Manley<\/a> took up the mantle a few years later, and always found a way to inject extra spite into each match-up. Undoubtedly spurned on by the fantastic gamesmanship of Talbert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life After Football<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talbert retired in 1980 and returned to Texas, where he built a second career running oil and hotel businesses.
