Pessimistic about the season, optimistic about Josh Johnson

Postby welch » Sat Oct 27, 2018 8:07 pm

Consider that this was this a thread for sunshine-optimism.

It has been more than a decade...that's when Joe Gibbs retired. Right now, Saturday evening before a Giants' game, the Redskins look competent, better than mediocre. Maybe even pretty good. Here's hoping.

Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath!
Fight for old D.C.!

Run or pass and score—We want a lot more!
Beat 'em, Swamp 'em,
Touchdown! -- Let the points soar!
Fight on, fight on 'Til you have won
Sons of Wash-ing-ton. Rah!, Rah!, Rah!

Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath!
Fight for old D.C.!

Outplayed the Giants today. Defense was fine and OL was pretty good.

I think the Skins' record is more of a reflection of just how poor the division is, rather than the Skins being good. Why do I say this? Because a truly good team would not have gotten blow out vs the Saints like the Skins did...I hope they win the division, but I don't see them going deep into the post season...

the opening line for the Falcons game was Redskins by 3 - now down to 1.5 ...

Smith and Gruden need to get the offense in gear this week ...

I'm trying to stay positive ....

Supposing Gruden wins the division and makes the playoffs, the correct response is "fire him"? Give me a break. I just don't understand this type of fandom where we're supposed to root for people in the organization to fail.

I'd also that the notion that "we got lucky" this year is complete nonsense. There's nothing lucky about the defense they've put together this year. This has been built over multiple years of pretty decent drafts and FA decisions. Say what you want about Bruce, he brought in Allen, Payne, Settle, Norman, Swearinger, etc; And he hasn't wasted cap space overpaying over the hill vets. We may have gotten lucky on Adrian Peterson, but he's also running behind a solid offensive line built through the draft.

Think we're bound to Alex Smith for a few seasons, but I would not mind seeing the team draft a first round QB next year if someone decent was available to them.

I was also expecting a 7 - 9 season. The defense looks good. A strong DL, good LB's, Norman is a good CB and hoping that Dunbar gets healthy. Safeties were good, and now, Clinton-Dix makes the best pairing since Sean Taylor played alongside anybody else. OL is a winner, and no serious injuries. Peterson is a keeper. Receivers, well, the receivers are mediocre. As Smith gets sharper, the passing should become good enough to score on most teams.

So far, this is fun. Here's for a sixth win!

I'm hoping we win the next 9 games ... one game at a time

I'm also hoping that we get a new GM and while I don't think Jay Gruden is a bad coach I doubt that a new GM will keep him very long :D

OR ... Dan and Bruce may continue to run things and they will finally earn respect as the NFL geniuses they have always thought they were

maybe they can make this franchise into a regular playoff contender ROTFALMAO

Another improvement I see is the overall lack of serious injuries. Last year at this time we had a good number of key players sidelined, this year we have the expected dings and aches you'd expect from pro football. I felt last year was excessive, something wrong in the conditioning of the players. I don't see that this year.

Still feeling optimistic. Defense is young, and was not ready for the game. Offense was even more unready. Redskins are in the middle: able to beat the bottom third of the league. Atlanta is the bottom of the top third. Smith is OK, but not more than that, and he has no receivers. Where was Reed? Doctson?

OL was hurting.

Still: gotta have hope / Mustn't sit around and mope / Nothing's half as bad as it may appear / so wait'll next year / And hope.

So mch for optomism, the reality sets in that we still have the same head coach setting the game plan, calling the offense and not making the critical 1/2 time adjustments.
A smart play caller would have recognized the O line all banged up and would have dialed up nothing but 3 second dink and dunk passes until the defense adjusted, then given them a dose of AP. Any play caller sending in 7 step drop back play passes just doomed the O line, those holding calls were a direct result of bad play calling. I don't remember any screen plays, may have been a couple but certainly not any TE screens. A smart QB would have changed the play to his advantage and then argued with the coach later.

this is directed at Grampi and other doubters ...

C'mon man! - we're 5-3 - certainly, we should have beaten the Falcons but we did what we seem to do a lot - we found a way to lose

every team has injuries and the good ones find a way to manage - there was no way that we could have won that game with those O line injuries but the test is that the coaches and the FO have to find a way to be competitive for the next 8 games - fortunately the first 8 games were thought to be the 'tough' part of the season - we just need to find a way to go 5-3 over the next 8 games

I know we're not a good team but this is the Redskins and you never know what the guys in charge might do - we could get lucky and find some more players like Peterson that many thought would not help this franchise much

I'm optimistic - if things don't get better here I'm optimistic that there may be some changes that will ensure we will get better

Postby SkinsJock » Mon Nov 05, 2018 8:52 pm

it's simple - we're a 5-2 team playing at home and we're on a 3 game win streak ... the oddsmakers 'opened' at 3 went to 1.5 and on Sunday were back at 2.5 - a lot of people that don't care about the Redskins thought that they were going to win

I thought we'd be hard pressed to win this game but I did not think that most of the guys involved (coaches & players) would not do their jobs well

we stunk - we're not that bad - it really pisses me off that people want to make excuses

sure we lost players but we did not look good at all before we lost those players

I'm optimistic .... but these guys are certainly trying my patience

SkinsJock - When will you learn not to get your hopes up on the Skins? They could be 7-1 right now, and I would still expect them to blow it. They've gotten our hopes up before, only to stomp them in the dirt. They're still coached by Jay Gruden and owned by Dan Snyder...that should tell you all you need to know...

With "fans" like these who needs enemies. What tells me all I need to know is how certain people are always the first to jump on the bitching bandwagon but never around when the team is performing well or winning games no one expects them to win. Not a single *f$ck* peep out of these "fans" for the last three weeks, all of which were wins, but now we hear from them.

*f$ck* off. You're not fans. [-(

Cooper is one guy I never expected to be on the street. He was a top ten pick five years ago. I think I remember hoping the Skins would draft him since they had two studs named Lichtensteiger and Chester at guard that season.

Is what it is, I guess. Tampa isn't the scariest team in the league, but they've shown they can score points. Going to suck if we get into another shootout with a line that has been together for three days.

Vegas has us +3, so at least we're not expected to win the game or anything... :)

The Vegas odds are only an indication - the Redskins offense should have had a much better game against that Falcons defense

this week our defense is up against a good offense but Tampa has a terrible defense

even before the injuries, outside of AP we don't have much of an offense and last week we only gave him the ball 9 times

keep in mind - this is an optimistic thread

personally I don't gamble at all (I don't even waste money on buying lottery tickets) and have little to no faith in betting lines, I used the "line" only as a guide to show that we were favored by the idiots who gamble

last week going up against a 3-4 unit we were 'favored' to win and did not - this week things might be better because a 'weaker' team IMO is favored to beat us - Tampa has a good offense and a terrible defense - the Redskins strength is their defense and the offense while in terrible shape has actually got a pretty good RB in Peterson

before the Falcons game we were 5-2 with a pretty good defense and for the most part, an ineffective offense - this week all we need is for the defense to hold a good Tampa offense in check and for the battered offense to just be as ineffective as they were in getting us to 5-2 - is that too much to ask?

wouldn't it be great if the offensive coaching staff figured out a way to just score enough points to win against a horrid Tampa defense
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

I just hope the leaders on this team step up and rally the troops... Win or lose i want to see max effort and the desire to be the best. I can deal with a loss and no playoffs... If we can stay competitive and play with hunger.

2 division wins is already progress.. Sweep dullass and nyg and its a good season!

These next 2 games are really important - we were 5-2 with a very good defense and a QB that was not playing as well as he should - Alex Smith has a QB rating under Eli Manning, Brock Ossweiler and Ryan Tannehill for crying out loud

to lose 3 games against teams that are not considered to be really good will not be good, even when you factor in the injuries

hopefully, everybody makes a huge effort - we need it

Lmmfao if you think ATL isnt that good... The Colts game is the only one we "should've" won.

I wont be surprised if we drop the next one... TB has Fitzmagic and Djac and Evans... They routinely put up 30+ a game. Last 2 times we played a team that scores a bunch and has a "weak d" we got routed.
Add injuries and the recipe for Fitzmagic to beat us is there. And it isnt the coach or owners fault. We've lost SEVEN STARTERS ON OFFENSE! Silver back, The Sheriff, Louvau, Guice!!!, our best player last year CT, muh boy Jamison, PRich.. Mosses is banged up at best.. AD, tho a savage has at least a bum knee and shoulder.. Didnt Roulier get the gig due to an injury? Like comeon man everyone is a back up with AS learning the system with new guys each week. There are excuses and facts.. We won however many games last year in spite of Kirk.. AS hasnt won many but he's lost much less!

1-6 vs the cow *sh$t*
Loss to the 2 win vagynts with 3 picks no tds to miss the playoffs.

At least we arent THAT TEAM.

Its so funny how polar opposites we are in thought and expectations... Every year I predict 19-0... Every year your "optimistic" for 7 or so wins. Then in real life I legit expect to lose each and every week. Worst team ever looking for first win? We got you. Need to break a record? Hold my beer... Playoffs? Nah fam you first... But I maintain hope and want to see incremental improvements. From trash to now is hard to do fast- yet you say how bad we are owned and project mediocrity, then expect excellence. Like you set your self up for heart break every week we lose- Cle can beat us... NYG probably will next time.. Being such an advocate for change, why cant you change? DS will sell when we are grey and old... The 80's are gone... Enjoy what you can- lest more fans demand change and we end up with jhabba the hut chip kelley next year!!!

I'm foolishly optimistic.

Every game will be tough, but some good defensive play will give the Redskins a chance.

going into the season, looking at the first 8 games - I thought we'd be 3-5 or maybe 4-4 - getting to 5-3 with a QB that was not playing even close to what was expected is a PLUS - we may still end up with 6 or 7 wins as many predicted but we should end up at 7 or 8 wins because that is who we are with this FO and this HC

I'm still optimistic that we could end up in the playoffs this season, but for the long term, we will continue to be a 7 or 8 win franchise if we keep the same people in charge of the FO and the same HC

It's really simple - until we make changes to how we operate AND how we play, we should not expect to get any better
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

last week we lost to a 3 win team and this week many here are predicting we're more than likely losing to another 3 win team mostly because of the offenses - when you're a 5 win team against a 3 win team you would think that you would be more competitive - this is not good

I thought we should win both of these games because of our defense - I guess that's not good reasoning these days

next week we'll get to play a team with a good defense and a not so good offense - maybe that's what we need

Your signature reflect almost 90% of what you post... I just dont see what the point is in typing it over and over.

Dan isnt selling.

Who do you want us to persue to coach next year?

We've seen the merry go round of coaches- it doesnt improve things.

We ARE incrementally improving... First time the skins beat Dak fkn Prescott!!
-counting when we had djak garçon and kurt grossman

Your "we need change" falls on deaf ears when we ARE changing... Every year for the better

HUGE game for the Redskins - what an awesome job the coaching staff did today

to limit this top ranked offense to 3 points after they gained almost 500 yards is just stunning

the time of possession in the first half was 20 mins - 10 and we had 6 points and they only got 3 - unbelievable effort

CONGRATULATIONS to the coaches and the players

btw - that Falcons team that trashed us last week was just beaten by the Cleveland Browns - congratulations to Gregg Williams

DE-fense.

No, do not fire Gruden. Sacrifice Bruce Allen, instead. Snyder will say, "It's not MY fault. I gave him everything."

(Will remind me of "We gave him an unlimited budget, and he over-spent it".)

Big win for us...

Clevland has more talent then any team in the league... How many top 10 draft choices on both sides of the ball?? Lol

They also tied Pitt... Who look to be one of the best complete teams in the league.
The this team beat that team, so that team is better then this team logic- is illogical.

don't try and make something out of nothing - great win for the Browns against a good Falcons team ...

it doesn't matter how good or great the players are OR how much of the roster is made up of good or great players - if they don't pay well together they will not win many games

BOT - great win today for the Redskins and a great effort from both players and coaches - amazing how well the O line played with guys that are not great stars or 1st round draft picks

Huge game by our D.

That punch-fumble late in the 3rd when TB was inside our 30 was the play of the game.

Can't get too cocky, though. Few teams will make as many errors as the Bucs did today.

I doubt that anyone's feeling too cocky - we are very fortunate and the guys on the sidelines did a great job today

HUGE lift for this franchise - can you imagine how great it would be if the pukes found a way to beat the eagles tonight

I seldom root for ttid... But when i do i root for a tie! Next best thing is we are 2 games ahead and control our own destiny. With 3 starters missing on the front i give props to to Callahan for making it work just enough. If we can buil on Harris and JDoc... We will be that much better when Tdub and Crowder return. I still like this D!!! Even Norman pulled in an acrobatic catch!! DJ has these guys balling!!
